We are so proud of our family-owned estate in the Nahe, Weingut Korrell Korrell for their strong showing at this year's Beverage Trade Network Trade Network Sommelier Choice Awards. 2022 Riesling von den Ersten Lagen and 2023 Estate Riesling trocken received top scores, including Riesling of the Year for the '23 Estate. Blaufränkisch is the focus variety for Austria's Burgenland and the specialty of Weingut Nehrer, whose vineyards lie in the Leithaberg DAC on limestone and schist soils. Specifically, Nehrer is in St. Georgen, "the fridge of the Leithaberg," where Blaufränkisch is exceptionally fresh, mineral, and impressively complex from his top cru, Ried Poschen.

Blaufränkisch ticks every box for world-class varietal status. It's adept to a broad range of styles, highly expressive of soil and terroir, and capable of extended aging. We tend to think of Blaufränkisch as uniquely Austro-Hungarian, and indeed, that is its origin, but it made its way to Germany in 1877, settling first in Württemberg as Lemberger and then over a forested hill to Weingut Burg Ravensburg in Baden shortly thereafter.

Burg Ravensburg is the oldest place in Baden with Blaufränkisch, which grows on Gips-Keuper; another unique expression. Claus Burmeister grew up at Burg Ravensburg and is another master of the varietal. The top cru here is the Dicker Franz GG.

Thörle's Silvaner Saulheim (village) and Silvaner Probstey (Grand Cru) are limestone expressions from the Rheinessen interior. Two wines are among many, and a great Silvaner story awaits on Sunday, May 18, at Verve Wine Chicago.
