⚡️🔌 New to Germany? Here’s What You Need to Know About Outlets & Plugs! 🔌⚡️

One of the first things you’ll notice when settling into your new home in Germany is that the electrical outlets are different than what you’re used to. Here’s a quick guide to help you plug in safely:

🔹 Voltage & Frequency
• Germany uses 230 volts / 50 Hz
• The U.S. uses 120 volts / 60 Hz
👉 This means you’ll need adapters for your plugs and sometimes voltage converters for certain appliances.

🔹 Plug Types in Germany
• Type C & F (Schuko plugs) – Two round pins (sometimes with side grounding clips)
• Most appliances bought in Germany (or on base) already fit these outlets.

🔹 What to Bring / Leave Behind
✅ Bring without worry: Phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, most modern chargers (they’re usually “dual voltage” — check the label: 100–240V).
⚠️ Caution: Hair dryers, curling irons, coffee makers, microwaves, and other U.S. appliances are often single voltage — plugging them in directly can fry them.
❌ Better to leave or rebuy: Large kitchen appliances, TVs, washers/dryers — easier to get German versions or buy on base.

🔹 Adapters vs. Converters
• Adapters: Change the shape of the plug so it fits (no change in voltage).
• Converters/Transformers: Step down Germany’s 230V to 120V for U.S.-only devices.
👉 Many military families keep a few heavy-duty transformers at home for appliances they really want to keep.

🔹 On Base Shopping
Good news! On-base stores (AAFES & Commissary) often stock dual-voltage appliances and plenty of plug adapters designed for newcomers.
