Leaders in the construction industry have called on the federal government to remove the βroadblocksβ that are preventing building of new homes.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) said builders around the country are citing new regulations, complex building codes, taxation laws and business compliance obligations as barriers to building more homes.
The federal government's National Housing Accord has set the goal of facilitating the building of 1.2 million new homes over the next five years from July 2024. The HIA says the industry is βwilling and ableβ to deliver on this goal, but needs better policy across federal, state and local governments to do so.
The current challenges faced by the building industry are not only making it difficult to build, but are also adding upfront costs that affect homebuyers.
βConsultation with industry is needed across planning, skills, immigration, safety and compliance to ensure barriers are removed, transitions are well planned and solutions are fit for purpose,β said HIA managing director Jocelyn Martin.
