Galerie Mikael Andersen Galerie Mikael Andersen I 2014 markerede udstillingen "Günther Förg - Ubuntu" galleriets 25 års jubilæum.

Galerie Mikael Andersen was established in Copenhagen in 1989 and has since then presented exhibitions of Danish and international contemporary art. In 2014 the exhibition "Günther Förg - Ubuntu" marked the gallery’s 25th anniversary. The profile of the gallery relies on a number of established Danish and International artists that emerged on the art scene in the eighties and nineties such as Martin Kippenberger, Isa Genzken, Albert Oehlen, Cosima von Bonin and Günther Förg. Inspired by this active and dynamic dialogue with representatives of the German art world, Galerie Mikael Andersen expanded with a gallery in Berlin between 2007 and 2014. The gallery continues to put great emphasis on supporting young, emerging artists and today works with a number of young artists based in Copenhagen and Berlin. The gallery is representing the estates of the South African avant-garde painter Ernest Mancoba (1904 - 2002) and his Danish wife, the sculptor Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (1911-1984).

Opening today - 'Summer Accrochage'

This summer, we invite you to explore a group exhibition featuring a selection of artists from the gallery’s programme.

Step into the colourful and imaginative worlds of Phillip Grözinger (DE) and Fritz Bornstück (DE), discover the striking and intensely human portraits of Mustafa Maluka (SA), and experience the distinctive visual languages of Lars Tygesen (DK), Günther Förg (DE), Tom Anholt (UK) and Sebastian Dacey (UK). Spanning figuration, abstraction and everything in between, the exhibition brings together a wide range of artistic voices and perspectives.

Alongside the paintings, we present a selection of beautiful and powerful sculptures by Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (DK), whose organic forms and unique artistic vision remain as captivating today as ever.

A vibrant summer exhibition filled with colour, character and unexpected connections.

Today would have marked Wonga Mancoba’s 80th birthday.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who visited the exhibition 'Dream of the Fatherland', which has been on view at the gallery and has now just closed.

Later this year, Wonga's work will be presented in the exhibition 'Levende Væsener' at Bornholms Kunstmuseum and in 'Remnants' at Tensta Konsthall in Stockholm, alongside a publication of a monograph dedicated to his practice this autumn. In the spring of next year, a solo exhibition will open in Berlin.

Happy birthday dear Wonga from all of us! 🩶

The gallery is open today from 11am - 3pm as usual, marking the final day of Wonga Mancoba – “Dream of the Fatherland”.

Wonga Mancoba, 1946-2015, was a Danish-South African painter and draughtsman who lived and worked in Paris. Wonga Mancoba’s paintings and drawings are full of stories of slavery, poverty, folklore and urban mythology. His almost idiomatic treatment of these themes is always ripe with the tension of social indignation and skepticism towards the political and economic establishment. His works, though very different from those of his parents, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba and Ernest Mancoba, are conceived almost in symbiosis or dialogue with the art he grew up with and lived with his whole life. Wonga Mancoba’s vibrant, heavily stylized use of letters, public transportation and advertisements come together to form a sort of urban spirit world in which the ghosts of the past and hopes for the future can live together.

Galerie Mikael Andersen invites you to a conversation on Wonga Mancoba with artist Jesper Christiansen and art historian and Ph.d. Emil Elg.

The talk will take place on May 28 at 16:00 at the gallery. A glass of white wine will be served during the talk. The conversation will be held in Danish

Wonga Mancoba (1946-2015) spent much of his life in the shadow of his parents, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba and Ernest Mancoba. Yet his paintings reveal a powerful and deeply personal artistic voice.

In this conversation, art historian and PhD Emil Elg and artist Jesper Christiansen explore Mancoba’s expressive visual language, his connection to South Africa, and the tension between chaos and precision that runs through his work.

The talk marks the finnisage of Dream of the Fatherland, the first-ever solo exhibition of Wonga Mancoba at Galerie Mikael Andersen. Bringing together works spanning from 1994 to 2015, the exhibition presents Mancoba as a distinct artistic voice, shaped by questions of history, displacement, urban life, and identity. Moving between painting, drawing, and writing, his works unfold as fragmented yet deeply human reflections on memory and belonging.

Dream of the Fatherland runs until May 30.

"Dream of the Fatherland" by Wonga Mancoba features the series City of Wisdom, consisting of nine works of the same format. The consistent scale of the panels gives the series a rhythmic, almost mythological quality and presence to the exhibition as a whole.

The works explore urban life in Johannesburg, where references to the rhythms of the city are woven together with South African cosmologies and spiritual imaginaries. Elements such as advertising, letters, and public transport appear alongside symbolic and narrative structures, creating a layered visual language that moves between the everyday and the mythological.

In the selected work, the letter “S” becomes a central formal and conceptual focal point of the composition, standing for “Solidarity.” As with Sonja Ferlov Mancoba and Ernest Mancoba, Wonga Mancoba’s practice is grounded in the philosophy of ubuntu: “I am because we are” or “a person is a person through other people”, emphasizing community, interdependence, and a belief in a shared future despite the historical legacies and consequences of apartheid.

The exhibition is on view till May 30.

'Dream of the Fatherland' brings together works from 1994 to 2015 and marks a significant moment in the renewed attention to Wonga Mancoba’s oeuvre. While his parents’ work has gained increasing international recognition in recent years, this presentation positions Wonga Mancoba as a distinct artistic voice in his own right.

1994 stands as a decisive turning point. Following his first visit to South Africa after the end of apartheid, Wonga Mancoba began painting with a new sense of urgency. This experience profoundly shaped his work, introducing themes of history, displacement and identity that would remain central throughout his practice.

This weekend, Berlingske published a review of Wonga Mancoba and the exhibition 'Dream of the Fatherland', now on view at the gallery until May 30.

The article offers a glimpse into Wonga’s practice, from the vibrant, graffiti-like paintings and the precise, almost meditative drawings, to the deep artistic dialogue he maintained with his parents, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba and Ernest Mancoba.

It traces the family’s history between Denmark, Paris and South Africa, and describes how Wonga’s work evolved after a life-changing journey to his father’s homeland. The piece highlights the layers of language, memory, and heritage that run through the works currently shown in the gallery.

We’re delighted to present this exhibition and to see Wonga’s voice receive such thoughtful attention.
