I really enjoyed my time in Ecuador. In the beginning I thought that six weeks was a super long time, but it was not nearly enough—I could have stayed much longer! I'm so happy with the work I managed to get done in such a short amount of time.

Everyone was super friendly, from the other interns to the staff and the :) I was there over Carnaval, which was amazing—getting to experience part of the culture and dance with everyone was unforgettable.

I now have memories and friends for life thanks to El Terreno. This kind of and is something I'll carry with me always.

A legend read out loud in the place where it was born sounds different 📖

At the school in Guantug Cruz, a reading workshop brought local Andean legends back to the children who are growing up inside those same stories — the mountains, the water, the figures their grandparents still name.

Led by a local mentor alongside our interns, the session was less about teaching and more about listening: the children knew versions we had not heard 🏔️

You cannot effectively manage water systems you haven’t mapped 💧 The irrigation system is essential for many rural , but as it’s owned and run by , it's difficult to identify and make the strategic changes that will really make an .

In Tabea’s 🇦🇹 final presentation, she will present her fieldwork, of mapping the watershed and irrigation system, and why this baseline information matters for water security in a region facing increasing drought, forest fires and unpredictable rainfall.

In rural Guaranda, midwives have delivered generations of babies 🤲 Their knowledge has never lacked legitimacy in their own communities — what it has lacked is recognition inside the formal health system.

Gaby 🇧🇪 will present what changes when that gap starts to close. Her session covers the formalisation of a midwives' organisation in the region, the entrepreneurial opportunities that formal status opens up, and the dialogue now under way with the public health service on recognising ancestral knowledge as valid practice 🏔️

Clean drinking water is often the difference between a child who learns and a child who misses school 💧 In the rural Andes, schools and nurseries almost always receive water contaminated with sediments, bacteria and parastites.

Tabea 🇦🇹 and Channing 🇺🇸 will present the water filter installation project across local schools and nurseries — as well as the dynamic educational activities they created with children, so the next generation know how to keep themselves happy and healthy.

The Ecuadorian Red Cross ran a first aid training session with the El Terreno team, covering how to recognise and respond to fainting, how to manage wounds and control bleeding, and when a tourniquet is and is not the right call.

Our permanent staff are the people on site every day, so they are the ones who need this training first 🏔️ It is part of how we take responsibility for everyone who joins us here.

Real sustainable development is a two-way street. Meet Connor 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, an English teacher from England, and Annie 🇦🇺, a conservation biologist from Australia, who joined our team in the Andes to collaborate directly with rural schools and local educators.

In this exchange, Connor had the unique opportunity to work alongside local teachers, learning deeply from indigenous culture, values, and community principles, while helping local educators and students perfect their English with a native speaker. For Connor, the experience was incredibly motivating—giving him fresh, real-world perspectives to share with his own students back home and showing just how vital English education is in rural areas.
