ISLA CANGREJO | Where volcanic rock meets the Atlantic 🌊

Tucked away on the coast between Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes, Isla Cangrejo is one of those little Tenerife spots many visitors drive straight past without ever knowing it is there.

🌋 The natural pool sits among the black volcanic rocks of Santiago del Teide. A concrete sea wall protects part of the pool from the open Atlantic, creating a sheltered place to swim while waves break against the rocks just metres away.

🏊 There are no opening hours and no entrance fee. People swim here throughout the year when conditions allow but this is one place where you always check the ocean first. Calm sea and lower tide are best. During high tide or strong swell, waves can come over the wall, so never enter if the area is closed or warning barriers are in place.

❤️ And swimming is only half the reason to come. The coastline here is spectacular, with volcanic rock, incredibly clear water and beautiful views across the Atlantic. Isla Cangrejo is particularly special towards the end of the day — the west coast of Tenerife gives you some unforgettable sunsets.

🚶 Walk a little further and you have Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes right beside you. Playa de Santiago, the marina at Los Gigantes, cafés, restaurants and the famous cliffs are all easy to combine with a visit here. It makes a great little stop as part of a day exploring Tenerife’s west coast.

📸 Even if the sea is too rough for swimming, it is still worth coming down for the view. Walk along the coastal path, watch the waves hit the volcanic rocks and look back across this tiny corner of Santiago del Teide.

🅿️ You can park in the surrounding residential streets and walk down to the pool. There are steps down towards the bathing area, and reef shoes are a good idea around the volcanic rock.

🚗 From Costa Adeje it is roughly 30–35 minutes by car, making this one of the easiest natural pools to visit from the south. Continue a few minutes further and you are in the heart of Los Gigantes.

Some of Tenerife’s best places are the ones hidden between the big names. ❤️

JÓVER | Where the lava stopped and the north coast opened up 🌊

This pool was not built. It was poured. Molten lava ran down from the mountains, hit the Atlantic and froze into a black rock wall, and the ocean has been filling the basin behind it ever since. Anaga's peaks rise straight out of the sea behind you.

🏘️ The village above it has its own story. Tejina was an independent municipality until 1850, when it was absorbed into La Laguna along with Valle de Guerra and Punta del Hidalgo. It stayed what it always was: a farming village, and it still lives off the land today.

❤️ Every 24 August the village builds the Corazones de Tejina. Three huge heart-shaped frames, one for each neighbourhood, covered in fruit and bread and raised in the square in honour of San Bartolomé. The tradition goes back to the second half of the 19th century and was declared an asset of cultural interest in 2003. There is nothing else like it in the Canaries. If you are on the island in late August, go.

🚿 The pool itself is wilder than it looks, but not rough. Smooth bottom, steps into the water, a solarium, toilets, showers and a ramp for reduced mobility. The freshwater shower comes off the mountain through channels cut into the rock over the years.

🦀 Walk out onto the black rock around the edge. It is alive with crabs, and the view back along the coast is the photo everyone ends up taking.

🌊 Check the sea first. On days with heavy swell the waves break straight over the wall and the pool closes. In summer there are usually lifeguards on duty.

🅿️ Parking right by the pool, a small restaurant beside it, and a bus stop if you are not driving. Reef shoes are still a good idea.

🚗 A good hour and a quarter from Costa Adeje. When guests ask us what is worth a full day trip north, this is the answer. The drive back through Anaga is worth the journey on its own.

Some places are worth crossing the island for.
