ROC Bassus CF VS Daya Nueva Veteranos CF

🇬🇧 Where has the time gone? The end of May has arrived, bringing with it the close of the LFVA league campaign for the 2025/26 season. It would have been nice to be writing about a title challenge or a push for the top places, but for Daya Nueva Veteranos CF this season has once again been about building foundations. Progress in veterans football doesn’t happen overnight — especially in a league as competitive as the LFVA. Unless you are signing the region’s top players, patience and persistence are part of the journey.
From finishing bottom in our first season and second bottom last year, the ambition this campaign was realistic: establish ourselves around mid-table and continue closing the gap on the league’s stronger sides. With returning squad members, exciting new additions, an experienced management team in Paul MacFarland and John Coughlin, plus the fitness expertise of physio Bobby, there was genuine optimism surrounding the club before a ball was kicked.
Ten months later, Daya arrived at the final day having already recorded their best-ever league return: 14 points from four wins and two draws. It may not sound remarkable on paper, but considering injuries, suspensions, player availability, and managerial upheaval midway through the season, it represented real progress.
Starting the day in 17th place out of 19 teams, there was still an opportunity to climb the table. Standing in the way were ROC Bassus CF, sitting comfortably in 10th and packed with strong, technically gifted South American players. Daya had never beaten Bassus before, losing both previous meetings this season — a 5-0 friendly defeat and a 2-0 cup loss.
Still, there was renewed belief around the squad following the return of coach John Coughlin, and the players travelled to the coast determined to finish the season with pride and hope for the future.
A Dream Start
On a warm early summer morning, Daya named a 14-man squad. Peter Cooper returned in goal after a lengthy absence, while Declan Houlihan, Chema, Captain Rob Baker and Jacob Sharratt formed the defence. Jamie Richards and Paul Hennessy occupied the wide midfield roles, with Samuel Carlsson, Mark Nuttall and Antonio Perri operating centrally behind striker Sam Broadway, who was eager to add to his growing goal tally. Waiting to come in were Gary White, Johan Tham and Mark Doyle.
The instructions were simple: enjoy the occasion, work hard, and give yourselves something positive to carry into pre-season.
Daya began confidently, resisting the temptation to go long and instead trying to play structured football from the back. Their bravery was rewarded inside ten minutes. A slick move through midfield released Sam Broadway, who rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted home from a tight angle to give Daya a stunning early lead.
0-1.
Bassus responded immediately and nearly equalised moments later, only for Houlihan to brilliantly clear off the line after Cooper had been beaten. It was a warning sign, but Daya continued to grow into the contest.
The visitors looked dangerous on the counterattack. Hennessy and Richards were finding space out wide, while Broadway was causing constant problems up front. Soon, the striker struck again. Racing through on goal, he coolly dispatched his second of the morning to put Daya into dreamland.

The confidence flowing through the side was clear to see, but Bassus began raising the intensity. Despite Daya remaining compact defensively, pressure was mounting. Eventually, a lofted ball over the top allowed a Bassus midfielder to pull one back with a composed finish past Cooper.
1-2 — game on.
But Daya’s response was immediate and emphatic.
A loose ball dropped around 25 yards from goal, and Broadway unleashed a sensational half-volley beyond the helpless goalkeeper to complete a magnificent first-half hat-trick.
1-3.
Suddenly, the impossible was beginning to feel possible.
Daya could even have extended the lead further before half-time after excellent work down the right, but a misunderstanding in the box between Richards and Nuttall denied what looked a certain fourth goal. Still, after an outstanding first-half display, the visitors headed into the break with a deserved two-goal advantage.
Red Card Drama
The second half began relatively calmly, but the game changed completely within minutes.
Chema was shown a straight red card after reacting to an earlier challenge he felt had gone unpunished. With over 40 minutes remaining, Daya suddenly faced an enormous task with only ten men and limited options on the bench.
The reshuffle saw Nuttall drop into defence, but Bassus now controlled possession almost entirely. Wave after wave of attacks came towards the Daya penalty area.
To their credit, the visitors dug deep.
Peter Cooper produced a string of excellent saves, while the back line threw themselves into tackles and blocks. Yet the pressure finally told when a toe-poked effort from inside the area found its way past the unsighted goalkeeper.
2-3.
Momentum had completely shifted.
Tempers also began to flare. Richards was unfortunate to receive a yellow card following an off-the-ball altercation, while Bassus sensed blood and pushed numbers forward relentlessly.
Despite the siege, Daya still threatened on the counterattack, with Broadway desperately unlucky not to secure a fourth goal. One effort appeared to cross the line before being cleared, while another close-range header was somehow diverted wide.
Those missed chances would prove costly.
With time running out, Bassus broke quickly following a goal kick. Daya attempted to push up and catch the winger offside, but the attacker kept his composure and slotted beyond Cooper to complete the comeback.
3-3.
A cruel blow for Daya, who had been so close to a famous victory.
The closing stages were frantic, with Houlihan booked for time wasting and Doyle for a late challenge, and Bassus eventually reduced to ten men themselves following a late red card for retaliation on Captain Baker. But neither side could find a winner.
After a breathless, emotional contest, the points were shared.
A Season of Progress
There was obvious disappointment at full-time after surrendering a two-goal lead, but perspective matters. Before kick-off, many would have gladly accepted a draw away to a strong ROC Bassus side.
The result lifts Daya Nueva into 16th place and sees the club finish the season with 15 points and 35 goals scored — clear signs of improvement year on year.
The campaign itself has mirrored the match in many ways: moments of brilliance, difficult setbacks, resilience, frustration, and hope. A great start but a difficult finish!
Huge congratulations go to Sam Broadway for a superb hat-trick and for finishing as the club’s top scorer. His quality has shone throughout the season, and today he finally received the rewards his performances have deserved.
Special mention must also go to every player who has represented Daya Nueva this season. Through management changes, injuries, suspensions, and difficult periods, the squad has continued battling for the club and the village.
The road remains long, but progress is happening.
Now attention turns to keeping the squad together, adding quality where possible, and continuing to build something sustainable for the future of veterans football in Daya Nueva.

🇪🇸 ¿Dónde se ha ido el tiempo? Ya estamos a finales de mayo y con ello llega el cierre de la temporada 2025/26 de la liga LFVA.
Nos habría encantado estar escribiendo sobre una lucha por el título o por los puestos altos de la tabla, pero para Daya Nueva Veteranos CF esta temporada ha vuelto a tratarse de construir una base sólida. El progreso en el fútbol de veteranos no llega de la noche a la mañana, especialmente en una liga tan competitiva como la LFVA. A menos que fiches a los mejores jugadores de la región, la paciencia y la perseverancia forman parte del camino.
Tras terminar colistas en nuestra primera temporada y penúltimos la pasada campaña, el objetivo este año era realista: asentarnos en la zona media y seguir reduciendo la distancia con los equipos más fuertes de la competición. Con jugadores habituales regresando, caras nuevas ilusionantes, un cuerpo técnico de calidad formado por Paul MacFarland y John Coughlin, además del trabajo físico de nuestro fisio Bobby, había un ambiente de optimismo real antes de comenzar la temporada.
Diez meses después, Daya llegaba a la última jornada habiendo conseguido ya su mejor registro histórico en liga: 14 puntos, fruto de cuatro victorias y dos empates. Puede no parecer mucho sobre el papel, pero teniendo en cuenta las lesiones, sanciones, problemas de disponibilidad y los cambios en el cuerpo técnico durante la temporada, representa un verdadero progreso.
El equipo comenzaba la jornada en la 17ª posición de 19 equipos, aunque aún existía la posibilidad de escalar algún puesto. Enfrente esperaba ROC Bassus CF, décimos clasificados y un equipo repleto de jugadores sudamericanos fuertes y técnicamente muy dotados. Daya nunca había conseguido vencerles, habiendo perdido ambos enfrentamientos previos esta temporada: un 5-0 en un amistoso y un 2-0 en copa.
Aun así, la vuelta del entrenador John Coughlin había devuelto la confianza al grupo, y los jugadores viajaron a la costa decididos a terminar la temporada con orgullo y esperanza de cara al futuro.
Un Inicio de Ensueño
En una cálida mañana de principios de verano, Daya presentó una convocatoria de 14 jugadores. Peter Cooper regresó a la portería tras una larga ausencia, mientras que Declan Houlihan, Chema, el capitán Baker y Jacob Sharratt formaron la línea defensiva. Jamie Richards y Paul Hennessy ocuparon las bandas, con Samuel Carlsson, Mark Nuttall y Antonio Perri en el centro del campo, por detrás del delantero Sam Broadway, decidido a aumentar su cuenta goleadora.
Las instrucciones eran simples: disfrutar, trabajar duro y llevarse algo positivo de cara a la pretemporada.
Daya comenzó con personalidad, evitando el balón largo y tratando de salir jugando desde atrás con orden y criterio. Su valentía tuvo premio antes del minuto diez. Una gran jugada en el centro del campo dejó a Sam Broadway mano a mano con el portero, al que superó antes de definir con calma desde un ángulo cerrado para adelantar a Daya.
0-1.
Bassus reaccionó rápidamente y estuvo cerca del empate poco después, pero Houlihan apareció para sacar el balón sobre la línea cuando Cooper ya estaba superado. Fue un aviso, aunque Daya siguió creciendo en el partido.
El equipo visitante hacía daño al contraataque. Hennessy y Richards encontraban espacios por bandas, mientras Broadway era una amenaza constante arriba. Poco después llegó el segundo. El delantero volvió a plantarse ante el portero y definió con tranquilidad para poner a Daya en una situación soñada.
0-2.
La confianza del equipo era evidente, aunque Bassus empezó a aumentar el ritmo. A pesar de que Daya seguía compacto defensivamente, la presión comenzaba a crecer. Finalmente, un balón bombeado a la espalda de la defensa permitió a un centrocampista local recortar distancias.
1-2. Partido abierto.
Pero la respuesta de Daya fue inmediata y espectacular.
Un balón suelto cayó a unos 25 metros de la portería y Broadway conectó una volea impresionante que superó al guardameta local para completar un magnífico hat-trick en la primera parte.
1-3.
De repente, lo imposible empezaba a parecer posible.
Daya incluso pudo ampliar la ventaja antes del descanso tras una gran jugada por banda derecha, aunque una falta de entendimiento en el área evitó lo que parecía un cuarto gol seguro. Aun así, tras una primera mitad brillante, los visitantes se marchaban al descanso con una merecida ventaja de dos goles.
Drama Tras la Expulsión
La segunda parte comenzó de forma relativamente tranquila, pero el partido cambió por completo a los pocos minutos.
Chema vio la tarjeta roja directa tras reaccionar a una acción previa que consideró falta no señalada. Con más de 40 minutos por jugarse, Daya afrontaba una misión enorme con diez hombres y pocas opciones en el banquillo.
La reorganización obligó a Nuttall a retrasar su posición a la defensa, mientras Bassus pasaba a dominar prácticamente toda la posesión. Oleada tras oleada de ataques llegaban sobre el área visitante.
Pero Daya resistía con valentía.
Peter Cooper realizó varias intervenciones magníficas mientras la defensa se multiplicaba en despejes y bloqueos. Sin embargo, la presión terminó dando resultado cuando un remate dentro del área encontró el fondo de la red.
2-3.
El impulso había cambiado completamente.
La tensión también comenzó a aumentar. Richards vio una amarilla en una acción polémica, mientras Bassus olía la remontada y lanzaba jugadores al ataque constantemente.
Aun así, Daya seguía teniendo opciones al contragolpe y Broadway estuvo muy cerca de sentenciar el encuentro. Un disparo suyo pareció cruzar la línea antes de ser despejado, mientras que otro remate de cabeza se marchó fuera por muy poco.
Esas ocasiones falladas acabarían costando caras.
Con el tiempo casi cumplido, Bassus salió rápido desde un saque de puerta. Daya intentó tirar la línea para provocar el fuera de juego, pero el atacante local mantuvo la calma y definió ante Cooper para completar la remontada.
3-3.
Un golpe muy duro para Daya, que había acariciado una victoria histórica.
Los minutos finales fueron frenéticos. Houlihan vio amarilla por perder tiempo y Bassus terminó también con diez jugadores tras una roja por una acción sobre el capitán Baker. Sin embargo, ninguno de los dos equipos encontró el gol de la victoria.
Tras un encuentro vibrante y lleno de emociones, ambos conjuntos tuvieron que conformarse con un punto.
Una Temporada de Progreso
Había decepción al final por dejar escapar una ventaja de dos goles, pero también es importante mantener la perspectiva. Antes del partido, muchos habrían aceptado encantados un empate ante un equipo tan fuerte como ROC Bassus.
El resultado permite a Daya Nueva terminar la temporada en 16ª posición con 15 puntos y 35 goles marcados, señales claras de mejora año tras año.
La temporada, en muchos sentidos, ha sido un reflejo de este partido: momentos brillantes, dificultades, resiliencia, frustración y esperanza.
Mención especial para Sam Broadway, autor de un magnífico hat-trick y máximo goleador del equipo esta temporada. Su calidad ha sido evidente durante todo el año y hoy recibió por fin el premio que tantas veces mereció.
También merece reconocimiento cada jugador que ha representado a Daya Nueva esta temporada. Entre cambios en el cuerpo técnico, lesiones, sanciones y momentos difíciles, el grupo nunca dejó de luchar por el club y por el pueblo.
El camino sigue siendo largo, pero el progreso es evidente.
Ahora toca trabajar para mantener unido al grupo, añadir calidad donde sea posible y seguir construyendo un proyecto sólido para el futuro del fútbol de veteranos en Daya Nueva.
