🚴🇪🇸 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝟭 𝗢𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗕𝗘𝗥: 𝗖𝗬𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗘
From 1 October, Spain's updated traffic regulations will introduce an important change for cyclists.
Until now, cyclists were generally only expected to ride in the centre of the lane on designated 𝒄𝒚𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒕𝒔 (𝒄𝒊𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒔) in urban areas. Under the new rules, cyclists will be allowed to ride in the centre of the lane as the general rule, provided it is safe to do so.
🚲 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻❓
✅ Cyclists should normally position themselves in the centre of the lane, where their safety and that of other road users allows.
✅ On roads with two or more lanes in the same direction, cyclists should normally use the right-hand lane.
✅ They may move into another lane when turning or whenever it is necessary for their safety.
🚗 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱❓
The DGT says the aim is to:
👀 Increase cyclists' visibility.
🚶 Keep cyclists further away from pedestrians and pavements.
↔️ Encourage drivers to change lanes when overtaking, rather than trying to squeeze past within the same lane.
