We asked Nick to describe Karisma in one word. He used two.

Business family.

He is 25, runs a LinkedIn infrastructure business and had just moved to Barcelona. What he wanted was people at the same stage, somewhere the business side and the personal side could come up in the same evening.

We hear a version of this every week. Not right now. After this launch. Next quarter, once things settle.

Things don’t really settle. There is always a launch, a hire, a quarter that needs you. That is the job we all signed up for.

And the busy stretches are the ones that cost you most. You sleep badly, you eat on the move, and you tell yourself it is temporary.

The things that keep you well are never the urgent ones, so they are the ones that move. The day off, the check-up, the week away. We stopped leaving that to a good week, and it’s a fixed day in our members’ calendar now.

This month it’s a Sunday at a masia an hour outside Barcelona. Nobody had to find the right month for it.

For a long time we thought our job was to design the perfect programme. Twelve months of access for everyone, big campaigns around the experiences, the same path for all of them, run it properly and people will grow.

But that does not work, and the reason is obvious once you say it out loud. What got you unstuck last year is almost never what you need this year. As you grow you will face different walls that you need to break.

When founders apply, we ask what’s missing in their life right now, and most of them answer “people.” They say community, or friends, or peers who actually get it. Only a few mention anything about growth on its own.

So the pod isn’t really a business exercise. It’s about knowing your numbers and knowing your people, since founders who trust each other usually end up friends.

And any community can put six founders in a room. What takes us the longest is deciding which six.

Most founders have had this conversation a hundred times.

Nobody means any harm by it. They just haven’t done this, so they can’t really know what it involves. And being the only person you know who does gets tiring after a few years.

At our tables it goes the other way. You can mention a good quarter without it sounding like a brag, and a bad one without it worrying anyone, because everybody there has had both.

Which one of these do you hear the most?

We know how hard it is to build something in a city that isn’t yours, with everyone who really knows you somewhere else.

We can survive three weeks without food and three days without water. Our brains cannot manage 35 seconds without inventing a story about whoever is in front of them.

ViKA Victoria opened with that, then spent two hours with us without ever putting a slide on screen.

Her method is four playing cards. The first three you give anybody. The Ace you hold back until you feel a good energy with someone, because the Ace answers something most founders have never been asked.

Who were you before the world told you who to be?

Her own answer came from her mother, who used to complain that she got off every flight holding hands with a stranger. Since you were a kid you were just talking to strangers all the time. It was so annoying.

She is a keynote speaker with a podcast now. Same job she had at eight.

Being able to tell your story is your birthright.

Around 150 to 200 founders apply every month and about one in ten gets in.

Someone doing €20 million applied last week, and every answer he gave us came back as the company. Partnerships, expansion, investor intros. Nothing about himself.

That part is honestly the easiest thing we do. What is harder is sitting with people who know you and saying out loud that the month went badly.

Most of us are better at being impressive than at being known, and it gets lonelier the bigger the company gets.
