Ten years ago we moved to the Costa del Sol from Ireland.

We moved over as a couple with two babies in tow and not one word of Spanish.

Ten years later, we call the Costa del Sol home.

People ask us all the time whether raising a family here costs a fortune.

Honestly? It can be as affordable or as fancy as you want it to be.

Some of our best days together haven’t cost us a thing. A picnic up in Paloma Park, a lazy day on the beach, a wander around the marina.

And then there are the days we happily spend a bit. Sea Life down at Puerto Marina, the cable car up for the views, or a full day with the animals at Selwo Marina.

The point is you can live here brilliantly on either. It’s all about what you make it, and that’s exactly why it works for families here all year round, not just in summer!

Everyone worries about this one before they move.

Will I fit in? Will the locals take to me?

The main thing is, integration doesn’t happen overnight.

It happens at the school gate, in the local cafetería, in the park, a simple hola to your neighbours. And believe me, we worried about exactly the same thing when we first moved here and ten years later, we feel fully integrated in the community.

So my biggest piece of advice? Put yourself out there from day one. And when you’re choosing where to buy, pick a neighbourhood that actually lets you integrate. Somewhere with the local café, the butcher, the bakery.

Buyer volume has cooled and the frenzy is over, but the supply squeeze has not gone anywhere.

Prices in Benalmadena are still rising between 5 and 8% this year.

Part 2: The fear was never leaving Ireland.

The fear was failing and having to come back.

Most people around us thought we'd be home inside six months with our tails between our legs. And the thing we dreaded most was ringing family and friends to say it hadn't worked.

You can put a number on flights, on rent, on the monthly budget, on how you'll live. You can make a plan to find work and a plan for the kids. But you can't plan whether it actually works out, because that part isn't in your control.

Oliver was 4 and Abby was a small baby. We had no relocation experts and no one to ask.

So we went two feet in with no plan B.
