There’s a viral rumour going around claiming that withdrawing more than €3,000 from your bank account in Spain will get you into legal trouble — with fines of up to €150,000. Let’s be clear: this is FALSE.

📣 At SGM Abogados, we really dislike fake news — especially when it confuses and scares people unnecessarily.

✅ The truth?
Banks in Spain are required to notify Hacienda (the Tax Office) when you deposit or withdraw more than €3,000 — but that’s it.
📄 No prior permission is needed.
❌ No fine just for withdrawing your own money.
💳 You won’t even be able to take out that much at an ATM — you’ll need to go into the branch.

📅 This rule has been around since 2010 and is purely for anti-money laundering purposes.

🚨 What can get you fined is not declaring income or gifts properly — but not for simply accessing your own money.
