Spain has always been one of the most popular countries for Brits buying abroad, but with Brexit underway and the exchange rate in a state of flux, some people have been waiting to see what happens with Brexit before committing to buying.

The poor exchange rate has caused an issue, with the Pound dropping 14-16% against the Euro since Brexit was announced. This is a factor for prospective buyers as it could make the cost of any future property purchase hard to manage.
However, lots of people have still pushed ahead with their plans to purchase, and in fact many people completed on properties prior to Article 50 being invoked just in case any laws or regulations were introduced retrospectively from that date.

Spain is host to the largest number of British citizens living in the EU (308,805) and just over a third (101,045) are aged 65 and over, and Spain will not be keen to lose the income that these ex-pats bring to Spain. Indeed, in order to provide some reassurance, in October 2017, Alfonso Dastis, the Spanish Foreign minister has said that British expats will be allowed to continue living in Spain even if Britain leaves the European Union without striking a withdrawal deal. He said that his government would ensure that the lives of ordinary Britons in Spain are "not disrupted" in the event of a "no deal" Brexit.

So, it may be beneficial, if you are thinking of purchasing your dream home in Spain, to do it now and gain residency status before the UK exits from the EU just in case the rules do change for people buying in Spain after Brexit.

So, now that we are in 2018, how has the Spanish property market performed on the international scene over the last year?

We are pleased to report that it’s good news, with the numbers showing some positive increases and interesting trends.

Although house sales in general have been up and down over the last five years, there has been a general upward trend, with steady growth over the last five quarters, which is a positive indicator for 2018.

Alicante remained one of the most popular areas in 2017.

The British are still tops in enquiries, although lots of enquiries came through from Sweden and Belgium.
