This helps the trace family lineage from both sides of the family, and it was mandatory for everyone since the creation of civil registry in 19th century.

Most of South american countries also use two surnames, as well as Philippines and Equatorial Guinea (with variations).

Portugal and Brazil also use two surnames, but in reverse order, maternal first, paternal second.
