🇬🇧 🌿 EL POBLE NOU DE BENITATXELL – What’s in a name?

Driving from Teulada towards Xàbia/Jávea, you’ll almost certainly pass El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. An unusual name… but what story does it tell?

Long before today’s village existed, this area was home to Moorish alquerías: small rural settlements with houses and surrounding farmland. Two names regularly appear: Benitagell, where the historic centre later developed, and lower-lying l’Abiar, towards Xàbia/Jávea.

After the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, these settlements became depopulated. The area was later resettled and in 1698 a new community took shape: El Poble Nou – literally ‘the new village’. 🏘️ From 1710, the church of Santa María Magdalena was built on the highest point. ⛪

💧 Down in l’Abiar, the landscape tells another part of the story. The Pous de l’Abiar recall the importance of water: pous means wells in Valencian and the name Abiar also refers to wells in Arabic. Vill***rs once collected their water here, and there was also a public washhouse.

Nearby lies the Cova de les Bruixes (Cave of the Witches). Archaeological remains of the former Andalusian settlement have been found around this site. Much later, the cave acquired its mysterious story. 🧙‍♀️ According to local folklore, smugglers used the area as a hideout and fires could be seen there at night. Children were told that witches gathered there – an excellent reason to stay well away. 😉

🍇 And where water and agriculture meet, Muscat grapes are never far away. For centuries, Muscat and pansa (raisins) helped shape the landscape. Today, that tradition lives on through BioMoscatell, with its focus on local, ecological cultivation.

So next time you see El Poble Nou de Benitatxell on a road sign, you’ll know: behind that long name lies a surprising little piece of history. 😊

🎨 Twee stijlen, twee werelden

📍 Zelf ontdekken?

🇬🇧🏺 PLA DE PETRACOS – 7,000-year-old art among the rocks

Hidden in the mountains between Benigembla and Castell de Castells lies a remarkable prehistoric site. Pla de Petracos was discovered in 1980 and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998. Here you can discover two very different forms of prehistoric rock art: Macro-schematic and Levantine art.

🎨 Two styles, two worlds
In four shelters (IV, V, VII and VIII) you’ll find Macro-schematic art (c. 5600–5000 BC): large dark-red human figures with raised arms – the characteristic orantes – alongside sinuous, snake-like and geometric motifs. Some figures are almost 1 metre tall. Archaeologists interpret this distinctive imagery as symbolic and ritual, possibly connected with fertility and the world of the first farming and herding communities.

The slightly later Levantine art (c. 5000–4000 BC) is much smaller and more naturalistic. In Shelter I (Abrigo I) you can see a small deer wounded by arrows, around 10 cm long, probably the surviving part of a hunting scene.

📍 Want to discover it yourself?
Enter “Santuario de Pla de Petracos” into your GPS. There is space for only a few cars near the sign. The walk is approximately 1.5–2 km return, with around 140 natural rock steps along the way. Sturdy footwear recommended.

After the rock steps, the path divides: Macro-schematic Art to the left, Levantine Art to the right.

👀 Going left? Look up! The large cave ahead immediately catches your eye, but stop at the information panels and look towards the orange-red hollows in the grey rock face above them: this is where the Macro-schematic paintings are. Binoculars or a good zoom help reveal the figures. Afterwards, continue to the large cave – the view from inside looking out is spectacular.

🦌 Going right? In the enormous Abrigo I, look for the tiny Levantine deer. A metal pointer helps you locate it.

✨ Some 7,000 years ago, the inhabitants of this region chose this remarkable place among the rocks to leave their mark. Apparently, even then, they had a taste for spectacular views…

🇬🇧🏺 Séquia de la Nòria – where the Romans left their mark

Walking along the rocky coastline of Playa Montañar II, you can discover a fascinating piece of Jávea/Xàbia’s heritage: the Séquia de la Nòria.

The channel was carved into the tosca rock during Roman times to carry seawater towards the lower-lying Saladar, where salt was produced. Salt was extremely valuable and essential for preserving fish. Nearby, at Punta de l’Arenal, archaeological remains reveal an important Roman settlement with facilities used for fish processing.

Centuries later, the channel acquired its present name from a nòria, an animal-powered waterwheel used to move seawater towards the salt pans.

The channel carved into the rock can still be seen today. A remarkable place where the Mediterranean, the tosca stone of Jávea/Xàbia and more than 2,000 years of history come together. 🌊🪨

A little piece of history that’s easy to discover during a walk along the coast.

🇬🇧 Authentic living in Dénia’s old fishermen’s quarter

Just steps from Dénia’s lively marina, you’ll find a completely different world… the old fishermen’s quarter.

No rush here. Narrow streets, simple façades, and tables naturally moving outside as soon as the sun appears.

This is Spain at its purest: outdoor living, long shared meals, and honest, typical dishes where simplicity and flavour take centre stage. The scent of fresh fish, the gentle buzz of conversations… and that feeling of “this is exactly right.”

A place where authenticity isn’t a concept, but simply… life itself.

🥾 Cap Prim – wilde mediterrane natuur

🇬🇧 🌿 The capes of Jávea – remarkable nature between rock and sea

Along Jávea’s 25-kilometre coastline lie four distinctive capes: Cabo de San Antonio, Cap Prim, Cap Negre and Cabo de la Nao. Each offers beautiful and impressive viewpoints across the Mediterranean. But look beyond the views: every cape has its own landscape and remarkable natural world.

🌊 Cabo de San Antonio – where the Montgó meets the sea
Here the Montgó massif ends dramatically in high limestone cliffs. Below lies a protected marine reserve with meadows of Neptune grass (Posidonia oceanica), an important habitat for Mediterranean marine life. The cliffs are also home to the extremely rare Silene of Ifach (Silene hifacensis), adapted to almost vertical limestone rock.

🥾 Cap Prim – wild Mediterranean nature
A narrow walking trail leads through low Mediterranean vegetation towards Cap Prim. Cala Sardinera lies on the side facing the Bay of Jávea, while on the other side the view opens towards Portitxol and its island.

Look out for the large-fruited juniper (Juniperus macrocarpa), remarkably well adapted to sunshine, drought, wind and salt.

🌳 Cap Negre – roots finding their way through rock
On the rugged cliffs of Cap Negre, plants survive where there is hardly any soil. Roots follow cracks in the limestone, sometimes for metres, searching for moisture and anchorage — impressively visible in our photo. The large-fruited juniper (Juniperus macrocarpa) also grows here.

🌸 Cabo de la Nao – a miniature botanical world
These sun-drenched limestone cliffs may appear almost bare, but appearances are deceptive. 62 vascular plant species have been recorded in its botanical micro-reserve, including rock scabious (Pseudoscabiosa saxatilis) and the rare Valencian horseshoe vetch (Hippocrepis valentina).

💚 So when visiting Jávea’s capes, don’t just admire the blue sea and spectacular views. Look a little closer at the plants growing from almost bare rock, junipers resisting the sea winds and roots finding their way through the limestone.

Four capes, four different nature stories — and four beautiful places to discover Jávea’s wild side. 🌿🌊
