And we're starting Season Two with something VERY Spanish...
# 🍽️🇪🇸 WHY DO PEOPLE IN SPAIN EAT DINNER SO LATE?
If you've ever arrived in Spain and tried to book dinner at **6pm**, you may have discovered something...
# # # The restaurant might not even be open yet. 😂
In Spain, lunch is traditionally the main meal of the day and is commonly eaten around **2pm–3:30pm**, while dinner often doesn't begin until around **9pm–11pm**.
But why?
# # 🕰️ SPAIN'S CLOCK IS PART OF THE STORY
Look at a map and you'll notice something interesting.
Mainland Spain sits geographically alongside countries such as **Portugal and the UK**.
Yet Spain uses **Central European Time**, the same standard time zone as countries including France, Germany and Italy.
Spain originally followed Greenwich Mean Time, but in **1940 its clocks were moved forward one hour** and the change was never reversed.
That means solar time and official clock time don't line up in quite the same way as they do in some neighbouring countries.
# # ☀️ BUT THE CLOCK ISN'T THE ONLY REASON
Spain's later lifestyle also developed around longstanding social habits.
Traditionally, lunch was a substantial meal followed by a break before work resumed later in the afternoon.
Shops and businesses often closed during the middle of the day and reopened afterwards.
Even though modern working patterns have changed enormously, the culture of **later meals and later evenings** has remained.
# 🍴 LUNCH IS THE BIG ONE
In many Spanish households, lunch — **la comida** — is traditionally the most substantial meal.
It might include several courses and is something to sit down and enjoy rather than simply grab quickly.
Dinner — **la cena** — tends to happen much later and can be lighter.
And between them?
There's another very useful Spanish tradition...
# # 🥪 LA MERIENDA
**Merienda** is the late-afternoon snack that helps explain how anyone survives until a 10pm dinner! 😄
Children and adults might have fruit, yoghurt, pastries, bread, a sandwich or something sweet during the late afternoon.
Suddenly that late dinner makes much more sense.
# 💡 DID YOU KNOW?
Spain's late schedule isn't limited to eating.
You'll also notice:
🛍️ Shops open later into the evening
👨👩👧 Families out together surprisingly late
🍷 Restaurants becoming busy when visitors from northern Europe might normally be finishing dinner
🌆 Town centres often becoming livelier after sunset
☕ Coffee and conversation stretching well into the evening
It's one of those cultural differences that can take a little getting used to...
But it's also a huge part of experiencing everyday life in Spain.
