We have all been through so much recently and staying connected is now even more important to us all.
It may have been some time since we were in touch, from when I was living in Lanjaron, Spain running my wildflower walks, herbal workshops and wrote for the Sentinella and Olive Press. I loved sharing my passion for all things herbal and wanted to thank you for your support and interest and to let you know what new adventures I’m embarking on here in the UK.
I’m still passionate about all things herbal, so much so that I have gone back to University to study one particular herb – Vetiver – for a PhD. I discovered Vetiver whilst living in Spain where my husband and I used it to control soil erosion. Wanting to know more I realised it is a plant that has huge potential to improve both the environment and our own well-being.
Known and used around the world , Vetiver is virtually unheard of in the West. I’m on a mission to bring the amazing benefits to a wider audience and I thought you would like to know more. I have had such fun discovering how Vetiver is used; as an ingredient in Nahari stews, a remedy for ADHD to an offering to the Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi. There appears to be no limit to the bounty of Vetiver.

Thought you might like to know a little more about how beneficial Vetiver can be, in helping reduce anxiety. You can either use the oil, which has an incredible warm woody aroma that soothes and calms, or you can drink a soothing tea made from the roots.

5 Natural Ways to Beat Anxiety
Natural ways to beat anxiety are easy and cheap to do. We all feel anxious at some time in our lives and generally have no problem coping. Although, anxiety isn’t all bad. It helps you calculate risks, makes you aware of danger and motivates you to be organised. However, when anxiety impacts on your daily life, it’s time to act, before it snowballs out of control.
It is important to seek a medical diagnosis before any self-treatment. Thankfully, there are a number of lifestyle changes and strategies that can help reduce the symptoms of anxiety. Try some of the ideas below. Plants can also play an important role in reducing symptoms of anxiety
Exercise – helps the body secrete endorphins that can improve mood, burn off anxious energy and stop over thinking. Taking exercise in nature, especially the Japanese practice of ‘Shinrin-yoko’ aka Forest Bathing brings significant benefits. Get out in the fresh air, go for a woodland walk and just let nature heal. This is not just a short term fix; you may feel the benefits for several hours. Just smelling flowers can help reduce anxiety.
Sleep - we’ve all lain awake worrying about starting a new job, or making a presentation. The consequence that we are not at our best when we really need to be, creating more anxiety. A good night’s sleep helps to break that cycle. There are a number of simple strategies to improve your sleep. First avoid late meals, caffeine, ni****ne and alcohol before bedtime . Second don’t watch TV, your laptop, phone etc before going to bed. Thirdly go to bed at a regular time, so your body gets used the routine. Finally you can create a calming atmosphere, using a room diffuser with Essential Oils. Vetiver Essential Oil contains high levels of Sesquiterpenes known for their sedative properties. Used in a room diffuser, or dabbed on a pillow can give a deeply relaxing sleep
Meditation – if meditation isn’t your thing, and often when you are anxious just sitting still is difficult. Try a room diffuser with Vetiver Essential Oil (known as the Oil of Tranquility). This helps create a calm and soothing atmosphere and just sitting quietly for a few moments is beneficial. It is amazing how effective something so simple can be. Just 30 minutes of meditation a day can reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress.
Diet – a diet high in sugar and processed foods can affect your mood. If your anxiety worsens after eating, check your diet. Eat a diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables, complex carbohydrates, lean protein and lots of water.
Herbs – supplement a healthy diet with herbs. Herbs can be eaten, drunk and inhaled to relieve anxiety. Oats act as a tonic to reduce anxiety. Enjoy a cup of Chamomile or Vetiver Root tea to calm frayed nerves. Aromatherapy uses the power of Essential Oils to promote calm and well-being.
