Storm Leonardo is coming, bringing significant rainfall and strong gusts of wind to Almería.
'Francis', 'Goretti', 'Harry', 'Ingrid', 'Joseph', 'Kristin'... and now 'Leonardo'. The string of storms continues, bringing considerable instability to the country for weeks.
"The weather across much of the country has been marked by rainfall and strong westerly winds, compounded by rough seas. This situation will continue in the coming days, although conditions are expected to worsen from Wednesday onwards with the arrival of the extensive storm 'Leonardo'." The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) is issuing a special weather warning for the coming hours, anticipating heavy and exceptionally persistent rainfall that will significantly affect Andalusia.
"The circulation on its southern flank will draw a mass of tropical air to the southern third of the Iberian Peninsula, characterized by a very high precipitable water content, especially anomalous for this time of year. Consequently, locally heavy and exceptionally persistent rainfall is expected in parts of Andalusia, where soil saturation is already high. Accumulations will be very significant in mountainous areas (...). Furthermore, 'Leonardo' will bring with it an intensification of the wind, with very strong gusts across large areas and widespread rough seas, which could cause branches or trees to fall, as well as damage to property and infrastructure," Aemet highlights.
For its part, the Southeast Meteorological Association (Ametse) also echoes this new episode of instability and the warning from the State Meteorological Agency. "A period of heavy rain begins tomorrow, Wednesday, which could bring significant amounts to the provinces of Almería, Granada, and Jaén due to Storm Leonardo, fueled by a subtropical humid air mass. Pay attention to waterways," the agency posted on its social media.
Tomorrow, the worst day
Wednesday, the 4th, will be the most severe day of this new weather event. Red alerts are expected to be activated in Grazalema (Cádiz) and Ronda (Málaga), along with orange alerts in Cádiz, Málaga, and Granada for rain and wind, and an orange alert along practically the entire Andalusian coast.
According to current forecasts, only the Levante region of Almería is currently free of weather warnings, although its coastline will be.
The Poniente region and the capital city will be under a yellow alert for rain starting at midnight. Accumulated rainfall of 15 liters per square meter is expected in one hour, and 40 liters per square meter in 12 hours. The warning will be in effect throughout Wednesday.
In the Poniente region, including the capital, Nacimiento, Campo de Tabernas, Valle del Almanzora, and Los Vélez, a yellow warning for wind gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour will be in effect again.
Meanwhile, the entire Almería coastline will be under an orange alert for coastal phenomena on February 4th, also throughout Wednesday. West winds of 60 to 75 kilometers per hour, force 8, and waves of 4 to 5 meters are expected.
New weather warnings will be activated again in the province of Almería on Thursday, affecting the entire territory. These will be orange and yellow alerts for waves and wind, according to current forecasts.
