EU versus UK passport at Departures

Yes… it’s another airport post 🙄 but honestly, no one seems to explain departures properly, so here’s the survival guide ✈️

Before you even leave:
• Download the Aena app – it knows more than the airport screens (found my gate before I’d even left the apartment… felt like a travel wizard 🧙‍♀️)

• Screenshot your boarding pass or stick it in your phone wallet. My friend couldn’t open her app at the gate and nearly had a full meltdown 😬

At the airport:
• Got bags? Straight to check-in. Most open 2 hours before… Jet2 was 3 hours (overachievers).

• Then security – looks like chaos, actually moves pretty fast.

Through security:
• You’ll be funneled through duty free (because obviously buying perfume is essential before flying 🙃)

• Then into the usual shops, food, and “I’ll just sit down for a minute” area.

BUT WAIT… you’re not free yet 🚨

• Passport control is still to come. Don’t get too comfortable or you might become one of those “they left without us” stories 😅

Gates:
• A & B = right
• C = left
• UK flights usually A or C (I always end up at C… basically my second home now)

Passport control fun:
• UK passports → queue on the right
• EU passports/kids → left
• Small queue does NOT mean quick queue. My friend waited 30 mins while a machine decided it didn’t like her face 🤖

After that… you can finally relax, emotionally drained but victorious, waiting for your flight like you’ve just completed a marathon 🏆

Tenerife South Airport – Arrival Experience (EU vs UK passports)

Arrived at 13:30 using an EU passport. There was a queue for UK passports, but it wasn’t excessive.

If the queue had been longer, I would have needed to move further towards the front where it splits—right for UK passports, left for EU.

I had previously been told that parties must stay together, but on arrival we were instructed to separate—EU to one side, UK to the other. I imagine families with children might be treated differently and allowed to stay together.

There was no queue at all for EU passports—I was the only passenger there aside from three passport control staff, so I got through very quickly.

My friend, going through the UK side, took about 20 minutes longer.

Overall, it was a very easy and straightforward process.

Had a lovely meal at The Slow Boat 🍜

They offer a great mix of Chinese and Thai dishes, everything we had was delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were also really friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better.

Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

ps Their caramel Vodka is amazing.

This is the weather right now in Costa Adeje.
Arrived yesterday at 13:00 on Jet 2, no queues at passport control.
Weather was wet and windy.
This morning was wet too, we had Thunder storms over night, but today has been ok, mostly sunny. We got caught in one shower of rain that passed pretty quickly.

European Travel Information & Authorisation System - ETIAS visa waiver – you don't need it yet.

The ETIAS was due to launch last year, but now isn't expected till at least Oct 2026.

You will need it to enter any of 30 European countries.
