Dreaming about retiring in Spain?

It sounds like paradise... and in many ways, it truly is.

But there's one thing many people don't think about until it's too late.

Last Saturday, I had to call an ambulance for my 83-year-old neighbour. He lives alone.

Since then, I've spent almost every day at the hospital, helping organise things that are usually taken care of by family: coordinating with doctors, arranging care, speaking to the social worker, contacting the German health and long-term care insurance, and trying to organise a notary to come to the hospital.

It made me realise how important preparation really is.

If you're planning to retire in Spain, don't just prepare financially.

Prepare practically.

✔️ Make sure someone knows where your important documents are. ✔️ Let your family know how the Spanish healthcare system works. ✔️ Consider granting a trusted person a Power of Attorney before you ever need one. ✔️ Keep emergency contacts easily accessible. ✔️ Talk openly with your loved ones about what should happen if you're suddenly unable to make decisions yourself.

These aren't the exciting parts of moving abroad.

But they may become the most important ones.

Take it from someone who has spent the last week learning all of this the hard way.

Enjoy the Spanish lifestyle, but prepare for the unexpected.
