Having recently been advised that someone had been let down by a house clearance company, that failed to return to the job to pick the 'less than perfect' items up after taking all the good stuff, I thought it would be a good time to post what actually happens to all the items WE clear and why we PROMISE to take EVERYTHING.....
1. The first category of items we come across is the fantastic condition, as new items that need no work on them to be able to resell on straight away. (Quite a rare species!). These go straight into our rustic barn which we have converted somewhat to resemble a shop and are listed for sale.
2. The second category of goods, are items that have imperfections like scratches, stains, rust etc that are stored in a 'waiting room' (normally my partners garage- much to his displeasure!) that will need some time dedicated to sorting out the further work needed to see if it can become a category 1 item and be put in the barn or will be one of the below categories.
3. This category consists of items that are way beyond my knowledge and/or ability to restore and also included in this group are items such as old doors, windows, building materials etc. For these items, furniture wise I will either sell cheap as an up cycle project or give to friends who enjoy those sorts of challenges. The building materials are sold in our reform division of the barn for people who need cheap materials whilst trying to renovate old cortijos etc.
4. This category is the important category for customers and the category clearance companies may not agree to clear. This is basically the rubbish, dirty, broken and beyond usable items. Now we make sure that these items are 100% unusable, even stripping them down if necessary to try to retrieve parts of the items that can be utilised. We are lucky where we live to have two disposal centres up the road from us. After seeking advise from the town hall, we were advised to use the recycling centre for metals etc (so broken washing machines etc) and the town hall run centre for old broken and unusable furniture.
As you can see, we do our upmost to avoid unnecessary disposal, we feel there is always someone that may need something and by promising to remove EVERYTHING we can at least control and help the amount being put in landfills ♥
