How a Cuban love song became Torrevieja's soul. 🎵
Right now, during Habaneras week, it's worth knowing the story behind the music. The habanera was born in 19th-century Cuba — slow, rhythmic songs of the sea, of sailors, of longing. So how did it become the heartbeat of a Spanish salt town?
The answer is in the salt. For centuries, ships left Torrevieja loaded with salt from these very lagoons, bound for Havana. They came back carrying sugar, to***co — and music. Torrevieja's sailors brought the habanera home, and it took root so deeply that this city now hosts the most prestigious habanera festival on earth. A song about one sea, kept alive on the shores of another.

There are dolphins off our coast right now. 🐬
Here's a reminder of just how lucky we are: the waters off Torrevieja are home to dolphins, and summer is prime time to see them. Pods are regularly spotted just offshore, riding the bow waves of boats and arcing through the clear Mediterranean water. It never, ever gets old.
Several operators run trips from the marina, usually a couple of hours, and the success rate this time of year is genuinely high. Bring a hat, a camera, and a bit of patience — and even on the rare day the dolphins are shy, a morning out on the water along this coastline is its own reward.

Tomorrow, Torrevieja honours the sea. 🌊
July 16 is Virgen del Carmen — the day this fishing city pays tribute to the patron saint of sailors and fishermen, and it's one of the most moving and spectacular events of the entire year. It's a celebration rooted deep in Torrevieja's maritime soul.
Expect a colourful procession from the Plaza de la Constitución down to the harbour, the famously chaotic cucaña (the greased-pole challenge over the water), and then the emotional highlight: sailors carrying the statue of the Virgin and placing her aboard a decorated boat that sails out into the Mediterranean, as crowds watch from the shore. The day ends with fireworks and the haunting "Salve Marinera" hymn.
