In 2026, the province of Alicante once again ranked first in Spain in terms of beaches awarded the “Blue Flag” — a distinction given for quality, cleanliness and commitment to environmental protection. Alicante leads with 77 beaches, the best result in the history of the award; Pontevedra ranks second (56), followed by Málaga (45) and A Coruña (44).

In addition, only seven beaches in the world have continuously kept the “Blue Flag” since the award was created in 1987, and three of them are in the province of Alicante: San Juan (Alicante), La Fossa (Calpe) and Carrer la Mar (El Campello).

With summer approaching, terraces and balconies in residential buildings are being used more often, which can sometimes cause inconvenience to neighbours. To avoid problems, it’s worth knowing in advance what is prohibited by law and what is not.

What does the law forbid ❓

Article 7 of the Horizontal Property Law (Ley de Propiedad Horizontal) establishes that residents cannot carry out activities that breach the community’s statutes, damage the building, or cause inconvenience, danger or risk to health. In addition to the building’s rules, it is also necessary to comply with municipal regulations and, of course, to avoid any behaviour that disrupts harmonious coexistence with neighbours.

Although the law does not strictly define what is allowed and what is not, it does set certain boundaries. In particular, the following actions are not permitted:
❎ creating excessive noise, especially at night;
❎ regularly playing loud music;
❎ accumulating waste that may affect sanitary conditions;
❎ storing dangerous or flammable substances;
❎ keeping dogs on the balcony for long periods, allowing them to bark or leaving their excrement;
❎ carrying out any illegal activities;
❎ breaching local regulations.
