The legendary Western to be commemorated in Almería with numerous activities at this festival
‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,’ the final installment of Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach, turns 60 this year. This anniversary will be one of the central themes of the program at the 16th Almería Western Film Festival (AWFF), to be held in Tabernas from October 8 to 12, 2026.
This was announced on Friday at the MiniHollywood Oasys, the film's setting and one of the festival's venues, by its director, Juan Francisco Viruega, during a press conference where a new collaboration agreement was signed between the Tabernas City Council and Senator Hotels & Resorts. Also present at the event were José Díaz, Mayor of Tabernas; and Marta Galdo, Director of Communication and Marketing for Senator Hotels & Resorts. and José María Rodríguez, manager of MiniHollywood Oasys.
“MiniHollywood Oasys is much more than a theme park; it is a symbol of Almería's history, a space that has helped project our province to the world through film for more than six decades,” Galdo emphasized after the renewal of the agreement.
This agreement reinforces the “commitment to culture, tourism, and the preservation of a legacy that is part of the identity of Tabernas and all of Almería,” he stated, and with which they want to continue “promoting initiatives” that allow new generations to “discover, appreciate, and enjoy this unique heritage.”
For José Díaz, the renewal of the agreement “demonstrates Senator Hotels & Resorts' commitment to Tabernas” and to a cultural project that helps give the municipality international visibility through film and tourism. This agreement also represents support for a significant investment that directly impacts the local economy and the employment of many Tabernas residents who work in the village.
In this way, the agreement consolidates the close collaboration between the festival and MiniHollywood Oasys, which will allow them to continue promoting a program that combines culture, tourism, and heritage, strengthening Tabernas' national and international position as a film destination.
Furthermore, the mayor of Tabernas recalled the €20 million investment plan that Senator Hotels & Resorts presented last March, which will enhance the tourism, educational, and leisure offerings of MiniHollywood. “This project will solidify Tabernas as a unique destination within the European landscape, incorporating the town's first hotel, new museum spaces, and the expansion of the zoological reserve, always within a sustainable and family-friendly model,” he noted regarding a “strategic investment” that will benefit the entire municipality, while also consolidating its identity, “so closely linked to the Western and its cinematic heritage.”
60 Years of ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’
The 60th anniversary of ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ will be the focus of the Almería Western Film Festival 2026. Many of the programmed activities will revolve around Sergio Leone's film through tributes, exhibitions, meetings, screenings, and educational activities.
Along the same lines, AWFF director Juan Francisco Viruega stated, “Senator’s support for the festival takes on a particularly symbolic meaning this year, as it marks the 60th anniversary of the filming of ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ in the Tabernas Desert and at MiniHollywood Oasys. Therefore, we are programming a series of cultural activities (workshops, masterclasses, roundtables, and book presentations), performances, and, of course, honorary awards to commemorate this anniversary.”
The renewal of the agreement between Senator Hotels & Resorts and the Almería Western Film Festival strengthens the collaboration between the tourism sector and the cultural industry, further positioning Tabernas as one of Europe’s leading film destinations, according to the Tabernas City Council.
The celebration of the 60th anniversary of Sergio Leone's masterful western will also serve to highlight the contribution of the Tabernas Desert to the construction of the universal imagery of the genre, as well as its continued relevance as a living setting for audiovisual creation and cultural tourism.
