Rennes-le-Château – A Priest's Secrets

Located about 20 km north of Axat, the village is famous for the incomprehensible mysteries surrounding it, particularly in relation to a priest named Bérenger Saunière.

In the late 19th century, the priest was appointed as the pastor of Rennes-le-Château. Early in his tenure, he began spending large sums of money renovating the local church, Église Sainte-Marie Madeleine, and he made mysterious discoveries in the church's archives that would change his life forever.

There were stories that he found a hidden document or treasure chest revealing an ancient secret – possibly related to the Knights Templar, the Holy Grail, or other religious mysteries.

Gorges de Galamus – Nature's and History's Hidden Treasure
Just 25 minutes from Axat, you’ll find one of the most breathtaking gorges in southern France, where the road winds through steep cliff faces: Gorges de Galamus. This deep, dramatic gorge cuts through limestone mountains between the Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales departments, offering wild landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and a fascinating history with hermitages and monasteries carved into the rock.

The Gorges de Galamus was shaped by the Agly River, which over thousands of years has carved the steep cliffs. Today, the gorge is a paradise for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers.

The towering limestone cliffs, rising over 300 meters high, frame the narrow valley, and the Agly River creates small waterfalls and pools—perfect for a refreshing dip on warm days.

Spectacular Road Along the Gorge – The narrow, winding road (D7), carved directly into the rock, is one of the most thrilling and beautiful routes in the region.

Hidden within the steep rock faces of the gorge is the small Ermitage Saint-Antoine de Galamus monastery, which almost blends into the rock. The monastery was founded in the 6th century and has served as a refuge for hermits for centuries. In the Middle Ages, it became an important pilgrimage site—particularly for those seeking healing and protection from illness.

Visit the small chapel built into the rock. You can still light candles here and enjoy the peaceful silence. Take in the magical view of the gorge—especially at sunrise or sunset.

Remember to wear good shoes if you choose the trail down to the hermitage, as it is steep. Alternatively, you can take the staircase that goes through the mountain.
