🇫🇷 Are your children included in your French citizenship application?

Well… it depends!

✅ If your child is under 18, lives with you and is named in your application, they can normally acquire French citizenship alongside you through the effet collectif.

❌ Children aged 18 or over are not included in a parent’s application. They must qualify and apply in their own right.

👶 What if you have a baby while your application is being processed?

You must:

📋 Declare the change in your family circumstances
📜 Upload your child’s birth certificate and requested information
✅ Ask for your baby to be added to your application

Provided your child meets the relevant conditions, they can normally be included too.

Your circumstances have changed—but can your French visa or titre de séjour change with them? 🇫🇷

Moving from one residence status to another is known as a changement de statut.

You might be looking to change:
• From Student to Employee or Entrepreneur
• From Employee to Entrepreneur
• To a family-based status following a marriage, PACS or another change in your personal circumstances

Changing status isn’t simply a case of selecting a different option when renewing your card. You must qualify for the new category and provide a complete application showing that you meet all of its requirements.

You don’t have to wait until your the renewal window before applying for a change of status. A change of status can be requested while your current visa or titre de séjour is still valid, particularly when your personal or professional circumstances have changed.

However, all change of status applications are Préfecture dependent. The procedure, timing and approach can vary depending on the Préfecture handling your application.

This is where many people become confused, because France doesn’t have a specific visa officially called a “retirement visa.”

The correct category is generally the long-stay Visitor visa (VLS-TS Visiteur). The “retired” element comes into the France-Visas application when you provide details of your personal and professional situation and confirm that you are retired.

This visa allows you to live in France without working and can be renewed from within France, provided you continue to meet the requirements.

You’ll need to demonstrate sufficient financial resources, suitable accommodation and appropriate health insurance, as well as agree not to undertake professional activity in France.

💻 An online account showing absolutely no progress

The first step is identifying the route that applies to your situation.

❓ How long have you lived in France?

For naturalisation by decree, you will generally need to have lived legally and continuously in France for at least five years. Your professional situation, tax declarations, integration and level of French will also be assessed.

❓ Which route is right for you?

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible:

📄 By decree – generally after at least five years of residence in France
💒 By declaration through marriage to a French citizen
👨‍👩‍👧 As the parent or grandparent of a French citizen – if you are aged 65 or over and have lived in France for at least 25 years
🌳 By descent – if one of your parents was French when you were born

Renewing your first visa? Don’t forget about your driving licence! 🚗🇫🇷

If your non-EU driving licence is eligible for exchange, the application generally needs to be submitted within your first 12 months of residency in France. So, by the time you start renewing your first visa, your driving licence exchange deadline may already be approaching!

The exact rules depend on the country or US state that issued your licence, so don’t leave it until the last minute.
