Designed by award-winning architect Rudy Ricciotti, designer at MuCEM in Marseille, the Jean-Boutin Stadium in Paris and the Islamic Art Exhibition at the Louvre, the Manufactory de la Maud once again showcases Chanel's intricate mastery of architecture in an urban context. Photographer-architect Simon Garcia reveals the newly opened fashion community in a series of photographs.
The plant is located in Porte d'Auberville in the north of Paris, an area that was once occupied by industrial and skilled workers in the 1970s, but has now been revitalized by the project. It is commonly known as 19M; 19 denotes the district in which it is located and the date of birth of Gabrielle Chanel, while the M denotes the words mains, mode, et métier (translated from French, it means hands, fashion and craftsmanship).
Clad in a fiber-reinforced concrete frame, the project covers an area of 25,500 m² with five levels and two basements, as well as a 13,000 m² agora open to the public. Feet (1,200 m²). 600 employees and eleven artisans are united in 19M to preserve and develop the know-how of Métiers d'art.
Some of these crafts include embroidery houses, Montex and MTX ateliers, decor department, Lemarié (flowers and feathers), Massaro (shoe making), Maison Michel (hats), Lognon (pleating) and Goossens (jewelers). 19M will also house valuable archives such as 70,000 designs from Lesage, the largest embroidery collection in the world.
