In Igbo tradition and culture, defecating on a deceased person’s grave is considered a serious taboo.

Such an act is believed to signify that the person knows something about what caused the deceased’s d%ēath.

Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, has been charged with contempt and remanded at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown after the Chief Justice deemed his apology over remarks made on Wednesday inappropriate.

Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara was reportedly directed to make a proper apology and retract his statement, but he maintained that he had already apologised. He was subsequently ordered to remove his wig, enter the dock, and was remanded until next Tuesday.

As he was led away, he told members of the Bar “Members of the Bar, I will be back.”

DAY TWO SIMPLIFIED

On the second day of the Supreme Court hearing about changes to Sierra Leone’s Constitution, lawyer Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK) was sent to prison for contempt of court.

• The judges had asked him to apologize for something he said during the first day of the case.
• He did apologize, but the Chief Justice felt it wasn’t good enough.
• Because of that, the Chief Justice ordered him to remove his lawyer’s wig, step into the dock (like a defendant), and he was detained bail or better still, jailed.

In short: one of Sierra Leone’s top lawyers clashed with the judges during this very important constitutional case, and the Court punished him by sending him to prison.
