We are truly blessed to be where we are here in Espelette.
In the heart of French Basque Country we are 15 minutes from Spain, 30 minutes from the Ocean and the towns of Bayonne, Biarritz and St Jean de Luz. Those are all fabulous in their own unique way.
We are in the foothills of the Pyrenees and just minutes away from fabulous overlook view points. From there you can see the Ocean as well as some of the higher peaks of the mountain range.St Jean Pied de Port ,a famous meeting point on the pilgrimmage road of st Jacques Compostelle de Santiago is also 30 minutes away.
San Sebastián is at 45 minutes. To many it’s considered the food capital of the world.
Per capita we have more fantastic and star rated restaurants here than anywhere in the world.
Winters are mild here too.
In short, we love it here
Tucked away in France’s Basque Country, Bayonne is one of the nation’s most underrated gems. Often overshadowed by nearby Biarritz, this riverside city quietly charms visitors with its half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and a rich Basque-French culture that feels both authentic and timeless. The scent of Bayonne chocolate drifts through medieval alleyways, while lively markets and tapas-style bars buzz with local warmth. Wander along the Nive River, visit the grand Bayonne Cathedral, or join the locals during the Fêtes de Bayonne, one of France’s most spirited summer festivals.
It’s a city that doesn’t shout to be noticed — it simply wins your heart. If you’re seeking France beyond the clichés of Paris and Provence, Bayonne is your hidden beauty waiting to be found.
