The Aude (pronounced Ode) is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees mountains and is not far from Spain. It is part of our region of Languedoc-Roussillon, and is surrounded by the departments of Pyrénées-Orientales, Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Tarn, and Hérault, with the Golfe du Lion to the east. There are two main cities in the Aude, Carcassonne inland and Narbonne on the Mediterranean coast. Carcassonne is very proud of having two famous World Heritage sites, the Canal du Midi and La Cité. La Cité is a large walled medieval city, one of the finest in Europe dating from 11th century. The number of visitors to Carcassonne is second only to Paris. It is a very popular destination of which we never tire. Narbonne was a Roman port until it silted up. You can still walk on part of the original Roman road, route Via Domita. Part of the original road is exposed in the city centre in front of the Hotel de Ville Our local Village, Montlaur, is a charming traditional wine producing village nestled in the beautiful Val de Dagne just 20 minutes south east of Carcassonne and 40 minutes west of Narbonne. The village of Montlaur is quite self-contained as it has a Bar, Bakery, small Supermarket, Butcher, Pharmacy and a Post Office all only 2 minutes walk from your accomodation. An ATM and service station for fuel are located minutes away in the village of Serviers en Val. It also boasts 5 wineries.
