Your visa gets approved. Then what?

A lot of people assume French healthcare starts the moment they land. It doesn’t.

Depending on your visa type, the gap between arrival and full French healthcare coverage can run anywhere from a few weeks to several months. During that window, your private insurance is doing the actual work.

Cancel it too early, before your CPAM registration is confirmed or your Carte Vitale arrives, and you may end up paying healthcare costs yourself for a period.

We wrote a full breakdown of what to buy before you leave, what consulates check on your certificate, and exactly when coverage kicks in for each visa type.

🚨 Still relying on the "they won't notice" strategy?

Since October 2025, France has been using the Entry/Exit System (EES), recording entries and exits electronically instead of relying on passport stamps.

By April 2026, around 7,000 travellers had already been refused entry to the EU for exceeding the 90/180-day rule.

If you're from a country that follows the 90/180 rule (including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and others), overstaying can result in a €198 fine, usually issued when leaving France. ⚠️ If you're found before you leave, the consequences can be more serious, including an order to leave the country.

The good news? If you already know you'll need more than 90 days, you don't have to take the risk.

A 6-month temporary long-stay visa (VLS-T) allows you to extend your stay legally. Once it expires, your 90-day Schengen allowance begins again immediately, meaning you can spend up to 9 months in France in a single stay without overstaying. Each VLS-T application is assessed individually and isn't renewable from within France.

🇫🇷 Planning a longer stay? Book a free consultation to find the right option for your situation, or save this post for when you need it.

Cultural etiquette you should know before moving to France

🥕 At farmers’ markets, let the vendor choose the produce
Unlike in many countries, it’s common for the vendor to select the fruit and vegetables for you. Point to what you’d like rather than handling the produce yourself.
(In supermarkets, you’ll usually pick your own.)

👋 Always say “Bonjour” first
Whether you’re entering a bakery, a small shop, a waiting room, or an office, greeting people before asking a question is considered basic politeness.

If you’re meeting friends or family in a small gathering, it’s also common to greet everyone individually with la bise (usually two cheek kisses).

🏠 Be prepared to provide a rental dossier
Renting in France often means submitting a surprisingly detailed file with documents such as payslips, an employment contract, tax documents, proof of identity, and sometimes a guarantor. It may feel excessive, but it’s completely standard.

💋 The cheek-kiss dilemma is real
The number of cheek kisses varies by region, but two is the most common. If you’re unsure, let the French person take the lead.

💶 Money is a more private topic
Many French people prefer not to discuss their salary or personal finances openly. While there are exceptions, modesty around money is generally valued.

🍷 Meals are meant to be enjoyed
Don’t expect a quick meal. Lunches and dinners, especially with friends or family, can easily last two or three hours. Restaurants also won’t usually bring the bill until you ask for it.

🤝 French people may seem reserved at first
Casual small talk with strangers isn’t as common as it is in some other countries. But once you’ve built a relationship, French friendships are often deep and long-lasting.

Think you need a job offer to move to France? 🇫🇷

Not always.

Many freelancers and entrepreneurs relocate through the Entrepreneur / Profession Libérale Visa, but success depends on having a genuine and viable business project.
