Always a great place to visit, 20 minutes or so from Roudeille but with added interest currently. A nesting pair of Eagle Owls have set up home in a small cave below the chateau and have three chicks - one still at the nest site, the other two in nearby undergrowth having fallen from the ledge (being fed by the adults and practising their flying technique).

Always a highlight of the year - Common Cranes heading back north from their Spanish winter lodgings. A sign - hopefully - that Spring is on its way after all the wet and windy weather we have had recently.

Autumn is a beautiful time to visit. These are some views from earlier today in the Ariège Pyrenees (and an easy drive from Roudeille) where mother nature really was putting on a show! A flying display by 30+ griffon vultures on our return journey down the Col de la Core was simply breathtaking.

Stunning local winter walk yesterday with the snow-capped Ariège Pyrenees sparkling in the sunshine.

We still have some dates available for Spring or Summer should you wish to explore this wonderful corner of France. Best wishes for 2025!

Beautiful day for a local stroll in 15 + degrees sunshine. Sprinkling of snow visible on the highest peaks, butterflies still numerous, a large hare spooked as we walked past it and birds everywhere feasting on a bumper crop of hedgerow berries. Bon weekend a tous.

After a couple of extremely wet days earlier in the week, the sun is now making up for lost time and the high peaks have a decent coating of snow. Some great views to be had of the Pyrenees and the Ariège landscape on this morning's walk around Belpech just over the border in Aude. Also found confirmation of something that has had me wondering for some time, that there was a tramway for transporting local produce to the main line at Castelnaudary. Will investigate further!

Some incredible wildlife within the gardens here and locally at the moment. Our resident Red Squirrels are busy stocking up on walnuts and yesterday we had some incredible views of European Rollers, Marsh Harriers, Black-shouldered Kites, a Short -toed Snake Eagle and a White Stork a few kilometres away. We have also had Honey Buzzards overhead and stopping briefly on their migration south.

Two stunning birds posing long enough to have their picture taken - a rare treat. The Golden Oriole (male) is one of the most striking birds we have here but is adept at evading the camera lens. This one was happily singing away for quite some time out in the open. The second bird is a Hobby taking advantage of a tall tree at the edge of our woods to pick its next hunting zone.
