👷 Project Update - Penarth Escarpment 👷
Work is progressing well on our Penarth Escarpment Project for Vale Of Glamorgan Council, where we are delivering a long-term stabilisation solution following a series of landslides. Since commencing in February 2026, the team has been working to strengthen and protect the escarpment, ensuring its long-term stability and resilience. 🚧
Located within the operational Penarth Marina car park and boatyard, the works are being delivered in three phases to maintain access to parts of both facilities throughout construction. ⛵
The project began with vegetation clearance, undertaken by Bespoke Rope Access using specialist abseiling techniques and supervised by Ecovigour to ensure environmental requirements were met. Following clearance, detailed inspections identified geological features requiring further assessment, alongside material from previous landslides that needed removing before stabilisation works could begin. 🌱
The project has now progressed into the specialist geotechnical stabilisation phase, with Spencer Quantum Ltd installing an active soil-nailing and steel-netting system. This includes a diamond-pattern arrangement of grouted soil nails and rock bolts designed to reinforce and stabilise the slope.
Once complete, erosion control matting will be installed to reduce surface erosion and encourage vegetation growth, followed by a high-tensile mesh system supplied by Geobrugg. Together, these measures will provide long-term stability while allowing the escarpment to blend naturally into its surroundings.
We are delivering the scheme as both Principal Contractor and Principal Designer, working alongside Tony Gee and Partners as Lead Designer and Mott MacDonald as the Overseeing Organisations Geotechnical Advisor (OOGA). 🤝
With completion targeted for Q2 2027, a fantastic effort from everyone involved as we continue to make significant progress on this challenging and highly specialist geotechnical project! 👏
