'Voltaire' is up for sale.

This punt has been a part of mine and my family’s life since 1988, the first intention was to have a demonstrator for the boatyard to champion electric propulsion with all its benefits of silence, clean and pollution free running.

She did a great job as ambassador for electricity back in the day when there was a glimmer of interest, a resurgence from the 1890’s when the Thames was home to many electric boats.

As the family’s boat on the river we used her for picnics, camping trips to small islands in the river, watching the racing at Henley Regatta and sneaking in to the Henley Festival to soak up the atmosphere without having to dress up in a dinner jacket or posh frock. She went to France to help Boris establish his boatyard near Angers on the Loire river and we spent a few luxurious days exploring a tributary and spotting huge water rats living in the river banks. Evening trips up the Hennerton backwater with a glass of wine and a tasty sandwich became a summer standard. We put a small fridge onboard stocked with a few beers and bottle of wine so anyone could spontaneously take advantage of a beautiful day.

Over the last few years we have not used our punt, we sold the boatyard and moved from Henley, so she needs a new home and another owner to enjoy her just has we have for 30 years or more.

“Hussar”

My old friend Ken Woodham and I re-built this wonderful Edwardian steam launch for ourselves years ago. Eventually we sold her but I carried on caring for her for many years. Ken built the steam plant and I re-built the boat.

“Traditional wooden boatbuilding is a stranger to parallel straight lines, flat surfaces, right angles and conformity. Boats have sweeping sheer lines, ever changing bevels and compound curved surfaces that can only be created by hand and eye.”

In W126 (November/December 2017) master boatbuilder Colin Henwood - Boatbuilder explains why he’s still using the same hand tools he’s had in his toolbox for over 35 years.
