🏑 Aldridge's quiet love affair with bungalows...
For years, bungalows got a bit of a bad rap. Somewhere only your granny lived, right? Not exactly the aspirational dream move people were chasing.
But something has been quietly shifting in Aldridge β€” and the numbers don't lie.
Over the last two years, 146 bungalows came onto the Aldridge market. That's 10.9% of all listings β€” well above the national average of 7.62%. And of those, 104 sold and completed, achieving an average sale price of Β£379,398.
Here's the bit that really stands out though. Buyers paid an average of Β£369 per square foot for bungalows in Aldridge β€” compared to just Β£297 per square foot for houses and flats. That's a significant premium, and people are paying it willingly.
So who's buying them? It's not just downsizers anymore. More and more, we're seeing buyers in their late 40s and 50s β€” couples whose kids have flown the nest β€” making the smart move into a well-located bungalow and thinking long-term. No stairs, bigger garden, more privacy, more space. What's not to love?
Add to that the fact that only 1,505 new bungalows were built across the entire UK in 2025 β€” just 1.3% of new homes β€” and you start to understand why demand keeps outpacing supply. Housebuilders simply don't build them anymore. Which makes the ones we already have increasingly rare and increasingly valuable.

🏑 Did you know the UK ranks only 29th in Europe for homeownership? It might surprise you!

Britain has always had that dream of owning your own home β€” but compared to much of Europe, we're actually sitting pretty low down the table.

Over in Eastern Europe, it's a very different story. Most countries there have over 85% of homes owner-occupied. Here in the UK, it's around 65% β€” putting us in similar territory to the Dutch and Swedes, and slightly ahead of France. Germany sits even lower at just 47%, which just goes to show there's no one-size-fits-all approach across Europe.

What it does tell us is how tough it's become for many people here to get onto β€” and stay on β€” the property ladder. Bigger deposits, affordability pressures, and the ever-rising cost of moving have all taken their toll. And with older homeowners holding onto their properties for longer, there are simply fewer homes coming to market for younger buyers.

But here's the thing β€” the desire to own a home in Britain hasn't gone anywhere. For most people, it still means security, stability, and something real to leave for the next generation.

So what does all of this mean for Aldridge? How does our local market stack up against the national picture β€” and what could it mean for prices, demand, and opportunity right here on our doorstep? I'll be sharing my thoughts on that very soon! πŸ‘€
