An exceptional gathering of up to 30 minke whales has been recorded feeding just four miles off the Isle of Eigg, in what researchers believe could be one of the largest such sightings documented around Scotland.

The whales were observed lunge-feeding through dense shoals of fish during a 10-day expedition exploring remote waters off Scotland’s western coast.

Marine scientist Dr Conor Ryan described the encounter as exceptional, saying the whales appeared to arrive rapidly as they gathered around a major concentration of prey. The feeding group was accompanied by seabirds including shearwaters and auks before eventually dispersing.

Minke whales are regularly encountered around the Hebrides, but large groups feeding together are considerably less common. Researchers said seeing between 20 and 30 animals in one location was particularly notable.

The expedition produced a series of other wildlife encounters, including a fin whale mother and calf, humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins, grey seals and a basking shark.

The Isle of Eigg lies within the Inner Hebrides and is surrounded by waters supporting a diverse range of marine life. The wider Hebridean seas are important feeding grounds for several whale and dolphin species.

The sighting provides researchers with a valuable snapshot of marine activity in Scotland’s western waters, while highlighting the concentration of wildlife that can occur when large shoals of fish gather offshore.

For those aboard the expedition, the sight of dozens of minke whales feeding together offered a rare and spectacular glimpse of Scotland’s marine environment.
