September Sunsets - the perfect time to visit the Peak District.

September evenings in the Peak District are made for watching the sun go down - cooler air, no crowds and, on a clear evening, spectacular skies that stretch forever.

As the day starts to fade, the hills take on a golden glow, the valleys become bathed in warm light, and the skies turn from blue to orange to red.

Find a favourite viewpoint, settle down on a sunny hillock and watch the landscape change as the last rays of the day sweep across the Peaks.

And you don’t have to travel far from Ashbourne.

Thorpe Cloud and Dovedale: Just a short drive from Ashbourne, Thorpe Cloud is one of our favourite places to watch the day disappear.

Climb to the top for sweeping views across Dovedale, the River Dove and Bunster Hill, or enjoy an easy walk around Lin Dale and Dovedale itself.

This sunset spot is made for photographs.

Ilam Hall: Head towards Ilam for beautiful limestone scenery, woodland, open countryside and views back towards Thorpe Cloud.

Carsington Water: The reservoir takes on a magic of its own at sunset.

It’s the perfect place for an evening stroll, feed the ducks, watch the golden reflections ripple across the water and enjoy a different view around every bend of the 8-mile route.

Further afield, you’re spoilt for choice. Think golden skies over Mam Tor, Bamford Edge, or the rugged beauty of the Roaches… camera ready, fresh breeze in the air, no people around to spoil the perfect shot.

In mid-September, sunset is still around 7pm, so there's plenty of time for a sunset walk, take some photographs, feel that September breeze and then head back to Ashbourne for drinks and dinner in town.

Autumn in the Peak District… a special time of year.

Cool, crisp and misty mornings. Golden sunshine breaking through the trees. Leaves turning every shade of amber, copper and russet.

Glorious Indian summer days that make you want to stay outside just a little longer.
Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Derbyshire. The summer crowds have faded, the countryside feels peaceful and inviting, but there’s still plenty happening.

In September, the Wirksworth Arts Festival brings 10 days of art, music, theatre and creativity, including its Arts & Architecture Trail. There are more than 140 artists across 70 venues to see, and it's only a 15-minute drive from Derbyshire House.

Chatsworth Country Fair, from 4th to the 6th of September, offers three days of countryside traditions, including spectacular Grand Ring displays, celebrity chef demonstrations, local food and makers, vintage fairground rides and plenty of family entertainment - all set in the beautiful Chatsworth parkland.

As the evenings draw in, Matlock Bath comes alive with illuminated boats parading along the River Derwent. A magical way to spend an autumn evening. Runs from 12th September until the end of October.

And back in Ashbourne, you’re perfectly placed for autumn walks, cosy cafés, independent shops and exploring the beautiful Peak District.

Afternoon tea, cream tea, high tea… whatever you call it, Ashbourne’s the place to take it.

It’s Afternoon Tea Week - a whole week dedicated to one of Britain’s most delicious traditions. Think sipping tea from dainty china teacups, egg and cress finger sandwiches, and fluffy scones plump with raisins.

It’s no wonder that this great British tradition is known by so many names. But what do they all mean?

A cream tea is the simple combination of tea, warm scones, clotted cream and jam.
Whereas afternoon tea takes things a little further with delicate sandwiches added to the menu as well as lots of other sweet and savoury treats, often displayed on a many-tiered cake stand.

And then there’s high tea, which, despite the name often being used today for a fancy afternoon spread, actually was a more substantial, savoury evening meal, often including things such as meat, fish, eggs, potatoes and bread, served with tea and all traditionally eaten from a chair with a ‘high’ back.

Here in Ashbourne, it’s most definitely afternoon tea and is a particularly lovely tradition to enjoy when you’re exploring this corner of the Peak District, whether in or out of town.

Take a walk through the beautiful grounds of Ilam Park, then pause at the Manifold Tearoom for an afternoon tea with a stunning view towards Thorpe Cloud.

Just a gentle stroll through Ashbourne is The Little Shed, a cosy café with inside and outside seating and a charming gift shop.
