Real blast from the past today as I viewed my old office in Saga Folkestone in Middelburg Square as I met up with Gary Drew from Kingsnorth Construction as he is busy preparing the former office for future residential development.

Huge project in the heart of Kent and been nearly 30 years since I worked here as a youngster ! Looks a bit different now !!

UTILITY BILLS !! We received a refund of £11,889.34.........or did we?

This is not a dig at utility companies but more to highlight the importance of being persistent to get the right results.

This supply bill is for a landlords communal supply for a block of 3 flats that we own and manage and has only a fire alarm and a light bulb attached to it ! You would not believe the size of the bill that the supplier was trying to charge us as they would not believe our meter readings despite sending in actual photos of them with diffrerent date stamps. This issue took them over 9 months to finally resolve after having insisted on installing a check meter alongside the original meter and various visits to the site.

Just goes to show the importance of keeping on top of the small stuff as this seemingly insignificant bill of maybe £20 per month had the potential to ruin our credit rating if not challenged, paid or dealt with correctly. Thankfully we spotted this one early and raised a complaint / review (and refreshed the 'being reviewed' status of the account several times which was not automatically reapplied) until the supplier finally agreed with our original findings.

So unfortunately this was not a cash refund but more a correction of a very long ongoing system error to write-off the incorrect debt that was amounting on the account.

In some respects it feels like a hollow victory but in the end due to persistence and stating our case correctly we managed to get this resolved. The thing that is often frustrating is the amount of administration time and calls etc this takes to get resolved.

I can't help but think there must be a slicker way for utility companies to deal with these matters - let alone the cost for replacing meters and sending engineers out multiple times !

Plans have been approved to create new high quality short-stay accommodation apartments for homeless people on the under-used Henwood car park on the edge of Ashford town centre.

This will be the first-of-its-kind modular development in the borough. It will be built on a steel podium, and all necessary safety features and flood risk mitigation measures have been adopted for this scheme due to the site situated in a flood zone area.
