After a long wait, Defra has now confirmed when the first SFI26 application window is expected to open.

From 30 June 2026, applications are expected to open for either:
• Small farms (under 50 ha)
• Farms without an existing Environmental Land Management (ELM) revenue agreement

Ahead of that, Defra will be inviting a small number of eligible farmers to test the application process from around 18 June.

Whilst applications are not yet open to most businesses, the announcement does provide some welcome certainty and gives farmers an opportunity to prepare before the first window launches.

For many businesses, the key question is no longer whether SFI26 is coming, but whether the available actions fit alongside existing farming operations, environmental objectives and wider business plans.

As more detail emerges, we’re already helping clients review opportunities, assess eligibility and consider how SFI26 might sit alongside existing stewardship agreements and future land management objectives.
