The Yorkshire Handy Woman

As of yesterday, 31st October 2024, The Yorkshire Handy Woman website and business was closed down. Sadly, my shoulder and subsequent increased disability have forced me to accept the sad reality, that I am no longer fit and able to fulfil the demands of this role and have decided not to stretch it out until spring 2025.

Thank you to everyone that supported my business goals and ambitions.

Like Madonna, I will simply reinvent myself based on my new levels of ability.

So, I am now 7 weeks post-surgery and have had my first follow up appointment with my surgeon last week. Following seeing the surgeon it has taken a week or so to take onboard the details of what was discussed and to make a decision about the future of The Yorkshire Handy Woman for 2024.

Prior to the surgery on my shoulder, I thought that I had been advised that the recovery period would be just a couple of months, but it would appear that I had misunderstood. It seems that the actual recovery is 9 to 12 months and I am nowhere near a return to my handy woman business. I am 54, so I guess it might take a little bit longer, however, I’m always determined and have already overcome so much since my truck driving accident in 2011 which has left me permanently disabled; I see my recovery from my shoulder surgery as just the next challenge/hurdle.

If, in 9 to 12 months time, it seems that the surgery has gone as hoped it may be that I end up with a shoulder that’s as good as new, and as such, I will then look to make a return as The Yorkshire Handy Woman in May 2025, fingers crossed.

If the surgery doesn’t solve the issue with my shoulder, then I will no longer be able to operate as a handy woman. Stubborn Yorkshire lass or not! If that is the case I will potentially close the business down then. I hope that my Yorkshire stubborn streak will help me get the other side of this too and I will be able to go back to doing the job that I love, fingers crossed.

If it turns out at the end of this year, beginning of next year, that I am not going to be able to be a handy woman doing the jobs anymore, then I have another way that I can help women and girls and that’s to empower them to use the power tools for themselves. I’ll look to teach DIY skills to you in your home or garden. Instead of paying me to do it for you, you’ll do it using my tools and knowledge/experience and in doing so, empower yourself into a life of female self-sufficiency.

So, whatever happens with the recovery of my surgery, if the goddesses are with me, I hope to be back either doing DIY for women, or teaching women to do DIY, in May 2025, all things being equal!

The recovery from the surgery has been advised to me as looking like about 2 months, minimum. I am 54. It might take a little bit longer. Business update – September 2023

I have some great news on the injury to my shoulder and it would seem that following surgery I will be able to work as a handy woman again, I have been referred for the surgery and hope it will be done reasonably quickly.

That said, there is still a long way to go post surgery and I’m not going to be taking bookings for any dates prior to spring/summer 2024, but I will be making a return to being The Yorkshire Handy Woman and I am optimistic that this will be sooner rather than later.

Going forward I will need to alter some of the services that I offer, so I will be dropping painting and decorating work with immediate effect and will have to avoid overhead work, particularly ceilings, but most definitely where I can’t get a higher position than the height of the place that I am working.

I will be starting back slowly and the first few months will be predominantly about commencing work that was booked in prior to the injury in February 2023, making my services available more generally from spring/summer 2024,

It is with very deep sadness that I must advise that I am forced to temporarily close The Yorkshire Handy Woman to any new or further business for at least the next few months.

Unfortunately, in early February 2023, I suffered an injury to my right shoulder, which despite my best efforts, has not healed in the timeframe I had been advised and had planned and hoped for.

I have been advised today, 2nd June 2023, that my injury is still months away from healing enough to work, and I have been advised I MUST continue to rest FULLY, or my shoulder will likely never heal.

I had hoped that I would be able to make a return to work in mid-May, and when that passed, I'd hoped for mid-June, but having seen my GP today, mid-September is the best I can currently hope for.

Over the course of the next few weeks my shoulder is to be more fully investigated, and I will keep everyone posted on what is to happen in terms of the business reopening or potentially having to close permanently.

I am completely gutted right now, but having faced this scenario once before, I know myself well enough to know that I have the Yorkshire grit it takes to suck it up, heal and come back better and stronger than ever.

That will be my goal now!

These bricks had been on show for a couple of years. Two visits and some materials later, mum's and son's bedrooms no longer have the bricks showing.

I got a message yesterday from mum to say she keeps going and looking at her smooth walls!
