Sungate autism friendly adaptations - LIGHT SWITCHES!
At Sungate, we bring our lived experience, plus feedback from other neurodivergent families’ into our unique house design and autism friendly adaptations.
This includes making lighting and light switches both safe and sensory💡💙
We know that some autistic people are sensitive to light, which is why Sungate has warm white lighting throughout and a soothing, colour changing, child safe fireplace in the lounge.
The twin bedroom has a galaxy projector and secure neon lights. Bedrooms are also fitted with dimmer switches to give guests more control over their environment.
We also know that some autistic children and adults (ours included) like to repeatedly switch lights on and off. This can be unsafe, frustrating, and exhausting, particularly in the middle of the night! To help, we have control switches in the kitchen so that the bedroom lights can be turned off remotely if need be. Sungate also has a lockable light switch cover in the single room, and tamper proof bedroom lights plug covers in the twin room.
As a safe and fun alternative, we provide a fidget box of visual and light toys, including a specially made light switch fidget board for our guests to enjoy.
So families, carers and loved ones can relax and enjoy their break at Sungate, knowing everybody’s needs have been met 💙
