As thousands of music fans get ready for concerts at Ormeau Park tonight and over the weekend, just imagine a few years from now, crowds leaving Belsonic and heading straight into the city across a new pedestrian and cycle bridge.

No more long detours around the embankment, just a direct link to transport connections, nightlife and everything the city has to offer.

Designed for both cyclists and pedestrians, the new bridge will form a continuous active travel corridor connecting South and East Belfast to the city centre, improving access to work, leisure and green spaces. It will also tie into the National Cycle Network and potentially a new green urban spine linking the Gasworks to Grand Central Station via Bankmore Street and Bruce Street.

Planning permission (Ref: LA04/2015/0405/F) was granted in 2016, and if construction begins in late 2025, this long-awaited connection could become a reality within a few years.

New aerial images show demolition machinery now on site at the location of the approved Queen Street PBMSA scheme. The site occupies a prominent city centre block bounded by Castle Street, Queen Street and Fountain Street.

The scheme includes the demolition of Norwich Union House, Westgate House, and the existing multi-storey car park to the rear, to make way for 821 purpose-built student accommodation units across buildings ranging from six to nine storeys in height. It also incorporates ground floor retail and a range of resident amenities.

Swipe through to see 3D visualisations of the approved scheme.
