You Never Know Whatโs Behind The Next Front Doorโฆ
One of the things Iโve always loved about estate agency is that no two days are ever the same.
People often assume itโs all valuations, viewings and paperwork.
The reality is very different.
Over nearly 30 years, Iโve walked through thousands of homes. Every one has a story. Every one tells you something about the people who lived there.
Many years ago when I worked in England I was instructed to sell an old oast house in Kent following the ownerโs passing.
The house itself was fascinating. Full of character, history and memories built up over a lifetime.
But it wasnโt the house that caught my attention.
Tucked away in a garage was an old Mercedes.
Covered in dust. Forgotten about. Left untouched for years.
The ownerโs daughter told me she thought she โhad got rid of all the carsโ and that it probably didnโt even work and if I could get it removed, I could have it.
For ยฃ500, the car was mine.
What emerged from that garage was a 1986 Mercedes 380SE with just 88,000 miles on the clock. Completely original. Immaculate. A car that had simply been forgotten as time moved on around it.
I got it running, it was a tank of a car, and with a 3.8 V8 it drank fuel like one too. It stayed under a cover most of the time and eventually I sold it on for quite a bit more than I paid for it.
Looking back, it may have been worth much more today.
But thatโs not really the point.
The point is that this job constantly reminds me that houses are never just bricks and mortar.
Behind every front door are lives lived, memories made, stories untold and sometimes the most unexpected discoveries imaginable.
One day youโre valuing a home.
The next youโre standing in a garage uncovering a forgotten classic car.
Itโs why, after all these years, I still genuinely enjoy what I do.
Because you never really know what โ or who โ youโre going to come across next.
