Elwick Archives: The Coastal Fortress 🌊
WWII Part 1
During the Second World War, the peaceful coastal escape we know today was heavily fortified.
The army took over the Salt Grass, a massive 14-foot tank trap was dug down by the shore, and barbed wire lined the beaches. The artillery firing range over at Ross was so close that the blasts would crack our windows.
Behind the scenes, the threat of invasion was a daily reality. Everyone who worked on the farm joined the Home Guard, and our grandpa was part of the resistance - heavily armed with hidden ammunition dumps, ready to blow the local railways if the worst happened.
It’s incredibly humbling to look out over the quiet fields today. The only remaining echoes of that era are the old foundations of the lookout post in the Cat Hangings, slowly fading into the landscape.
