DKMY Architects Ltd is an innovative design led architects practice and sustainability consultants based in Belper Derbyshire. Our office is located within the UNESCO Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site where Sir Richard Arkwright first harnessed water power as the energy source to run his manufacturing empire. At DKMY Architects Ltd our approach to design tries to adopt Arkwright's model; a

bespoke repsonse to a unique location, an understanding of the historical and social context within which our designs sit, the innovative use of locally sourced building materials and the employment of sustainable energies to help deliver practical and cost efficient solutions in which people can live, learn and work.

In an historic meeting held in the Strutt Community Centre, Amber Valley Borough Council voted to approve the 2018 application to convert the mills to a mixed use of residential and commercial units.
The unanimous decision marks a huge milestone in the future development of the mills.
Congratulations to all the groups that have contributed to this success and of course to Our Belper Mills for flying the flag, attending meeting after meeting and being the social mouthpiece to the community.

We gained planning permission for this speculative build on Bosworth Drive in Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire.

A surprisingly complicated application on a piece of left-over ground from the when the road was developed.

Designed to blend seemlessly with the neighbouring 1980s / 1990s houses.

Taking the ferry across the Thames from Woolwich to North Woolwich is such a pleasure. The two ferries appear to dance with each other, synchronising their movements as they twirl out into the river’s currents, before gliding past each other and reconnecting with the jetty opposite. 🇬🇧

Revisiting Richard Meier’s Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art reminded me of what I love about architecture. Drawing on earlier modernist designs the building plays wonderfully with light, shadow and space. It was a real treat to revisit it 25 years later.

Our studies into accommodation options for a small mill conversion close Sheffield Hallam University.
The regular window spacing in the external stone wall allows for a repetitive internal layout to be introduced into the existing open plan space.
Long thin rooms maximise the amount of habitable space that can be positioned along the perimeter of the building, whilst pushing corridors, lobbies and ensuites deeper into the building's floor plan.
