🚂💨 DID YOU KNOW that steam trains first arrived in Benfleet in the 1850s, over 170 years ago? And our local station has quite a history!

The original wooden station BURNED DOWN in the early 1900s! Its replacement opened in 1911, a little closer to London.

Until 1888, trains to London travelled the longer route via Tilbury, before the more direct line through Upminster opened. By 1961, you could catch direct steam trains from Benfleet to Luton, St Albans and even Kentish Town!

Fancy an early start? The first London train departed at an eye-watering 4.01am, arriving at Fenchurch Street at 5.20am!

Electric trains began replacing steam in November 1961, although the final regular steam service from Fenchurch Street ran in June 1962. But steam wasn’t gone forever.

In December 2012, the famous locomotive Tornado became the last steam engine to cross the old Ferry Road railway bridge before its replacement. And in December 2013, TWO magnificent steam locomotives crossed the new bridge together.

Does anyone remember steam trains at Benfleet, or watching them from the old footbridge? Would love to hear your memories!
