DID YOU KNOW? 🌊 If you regularly travel between Benfleet and Canvey, you’ve probably passed the Benfleet Flood Barrier hundreds, maybe thousands, of times. But have you ever wondered what it actually does?

Officially opened in 1983, this impressive bit of local engineering is around 90 metres wide and has three huge steel gates, each weighing roughly 30 tonnes!

Most of the time the gates are raised out of the way, allowing boats and the tide to pass underneath. But when a dangerously high tide is predicted, they can be lowered into position, effectively closing off the creek and helping protect low-lying parts of Benfleet and Canvey from tidal flooding.

So what happens to all that water when the gates are closed? 🌊 It doesn’t disappear! The barrier stops the exceptionally high tidal water pushing further into Benfleet Creek, so the surge is effectively held back on the seaward side until the tide begins to fall. Once conditions are safe again, the gates can be raised and the creek returns to normal.

And here’s a fact you definitely can’t see from the road, the foundations required piles driven more than 100 feet down through Benfleet clay to reach solid ground!

Quite an impressive bit of engineering quietly doing its job beside one of the busiest roads in the area. Interesting, eh! 🌊

🐛 WORRY WORMS ARE BACK! 🐛

Thanks to the lovely teams at Kinder Essex and Hug in a Shrug, we’ve got a fresh batch of handmade Worry Worms looking for new homes!

With the new school year upon us, we know that heading back to school or starting school for the very first time can bring a few butterflies and worries for little ones.

That’s where a Worry Worm might help. 💚 A little friend to keep close, squeeze tight and tell those worries to when things feel a bit overwhelming.

They’re FREE to collect from Amos Estates, 1a Spa Road, Hockley, while stocks last.

If you’ve got a nervous back-to-school youngster at home, pop in and pick one up. It might be just the little tonic they need. 🐛❤️ And a huge thank you to the wonderful volunteers who make them!

DID YOU KNOW? 🌅

“Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight; red sky in the morning, shepherd’s warning” isn’t just an old saying there’s actually some science behind it!

In the UK, our weather generally travels from west to east. A beautiful red sunset can mean the setting sun is shining through clear, dry air coming from the west, often suggesting more settled weather is on its way. A red sky in the morning can mean that clear weather has already passed, with wetter conditions potentially following behind.

And the red sky, weather idea is ancient. A very similar observation about red skies and the weather appears in the Gospel of Matthew, meaning people were watching the skies for weather clues around 2,000 years ago. Who needs a weather app? 🌅✝️
