Hugh was honoured to be asked by trustees to stand, and has since been humbled by the enthusiasm of the membership for him to represent their interests. As a resident of Scotland and a conservation-accredited surveyor with a lifelong interest in historic buildings, he relishes the prospect of dedicating his time and energy to the National Trust for Scotland. All hand on deck! The concrete deck of our balcony was laid today, another big milestone and close to the finish.

Turning the corner with stone repairs at Coldingham Priory. One elevation of the priory has now had some stone indent repairs and has been re-pointed in lime mortar.

No two days are the same here at the offices of Smith & Garratt. One day we are installing steps on to the balcony, the next we are installing some large statues.

The bottom step has been laid for the balcony we are installing at a Palladian mansion. This cannot be done with a forklift or hoist because the step lies direct on paviours. Our stonemasons, Sandy McLean & Co, used a brilliant trick to lower these heavy stones into position - ice!

A traditional sash-and-case window altered to an automatic smoke vent helps to make a compliant fire-fighting stair in an A-listed building durning conversion for commercial use. Here it is opening for the first time!
