ποΈπ World Su***de Prevention Day | 10 September ποΈπ
Today feels too important to simply let pass without saying something.
At Hayden Estates, we spend our days talking about homes, moves and new beginnings. But behind every front door is a person, a family and a life, and things are not always as they appear from the outside.
Mental health has touched us personally. Over more than 20 years in business, we have also sadly seen the devastating impact of su***de touch clients, their families and people within our community.
Su***de does not have a type.
It does not discriminate by age, gender, background, status or circumstance. It can affect anyone, at any stage of life, regardless of how their life appears from the outside.
The friend who's always smiling. The colleague who never misses a day. The person who makes everybody laugh. The one who seemingly has everything together.
Not everything that's heavy is visible.
We particularly need to keep talking about men's mental health. Too many men have grown up believing they should simply get on with things and that asking for help is weakness.
It isn't. Real strength can be saying, "I'm struggling."
This year's message is simple:
Start the Conversation.
Check on the person who's gone quiet. The one who's had a difficult year. The one who always says they're "fine". Check on your strong friends, too.
Ask twice.
Make the call. Send the message. Go for a walk. Have a cup of tea. Listen. You don't need all the answers. Sometimes giving somebody space to say "Actually, I'm not okay" is enough to start a conversation they desperately needed.
Behind every life lost to su***de was a person.
A parent, grandparent, child, partner, sibling, friend, colleague, classmate or neighbour.
They were loved. They were known. And they are missed, every second of every day.
Their chapter may have ended, but for those left behind, the book is far from finished. There is grief, sadness, unanswered questions, guilt, memories and an absence that can feel enormous even on completely ordinary days.
Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, but looking out for each other shouldn't belong to one day.
Check in tomorrow. Check in next week. Check in when there isn't an awareness day reminding you to.
