I often get told, “I’d love to do your job.” 😂
And I get it.
From the outside, estate agency looks pretty glamorous. Seeing incredible homes, indulging in one of Britain’s favourite obsessions, having a nose around other people’s houses, spending your days out and about rather than chained to a desk.
But my oh my, there is a LOT more to it. 😂
Like telling a client their chain has fallen apart and they’re potentially going to lose their dream home because someone three houses down thought buying a house whilst unemployed was probably a sensible idea.
Or sitting on someone’s sofa, watching their face drop as you explain their home is worth nowhere near what they hoped, because they’ve compared their two bedroom house to the 5 bedroom mansion down the road.
Then there’s the market itself.
One minute everything is flying, the next we’re lurching from one political crisis to another, interest rates are moving around and apparently Stamp Duty is being abolished… again. 🤦♂️
And yet, 11 years into this, I genuinely wouldn’t change a thing.
I’m incredibly fortunate to be self employed, running my own business with the freedom to decide how we operate and who we work with. It means we can keep things personal, take on clients we genuinely feel we can do a great job for, and actually be there when they need us.
I’m also lucky enough to work alongside a close friend I’ve now worked with for almost 10 years. In fact, he gave a 15 year old me my first taste of estate agency during work experience, so I suppose he’s partly to blame for all of this. 😂
Because behind the valuations, viewings, negotiations and occasional estate agency-induced headaches, there’s one thing that never changes.
For our clients, this is their home.
Often their biggest financial asset, but also somewhere they’ve spent years of their lives.
That’s a pretty big responsibility.
So yes, I get to look around some amazing houses.
But the real privilege is being trusted to help people move from one chapter of their lives to the next.
And after 11 years, I still bloody love it. 🏡
Maybe I really do have the best job in the world. 👀
