The Right to Rent scheme requires landlords to check that all tenants who occupy their properties have legal status to live in the UK.

This means that before you can rent a home in England, a landlord or letting agent must undertake passport and immigration checks prior to letting out the property.

The Home Office introduced Right to Rent checks with the aim of making the UK an inhospitable environment for people who try to live in the UK illegally.

We have set out below everything you need to know about how Right to Rent checks are undertaken and what they mean for you as a tenant.

UK homeowners borrowed a record £11.8bn more on mortgages than they repaid in March, according to figures from the Bank of England.

This net borrowing level was the highest of any month since comparable data began in 1993.

The market was stoked up by stamp duty holidays and by low mortgage rates.

Stamp duty holidays and low mortgage rates push borrowing to the highest levels since records began.

Landlords: do you know the names of the parts that make up a gas boiler?

When a tenant reports an issue with the boiler that requires a gas engineer to look at, the issue could be because of the following (see photo).

A landlord may then need to replace one of these parts but your gas engineer may advise replacing the boiler completely if it is really old. This could save you more £££ than replacing multiple parts.

It is important that landlords understand the importance of annual gas safety checks or annual boiler service checks as this will help you understand the condition of the boiler and prepare in advance for issues.

A gas safety certificate is required by law and must be done once a year.

The government pledges to ‘support first-time buyers and the housing market’

Polling has revealed that 69% of private renters and 63% of people living at their family home struggle to find many mortgages with a low deposit.

This will enable more households to access mortgages on both new-build and existing homes, without the need for large deposits.

First-time buyers will be able to purchase a home with only a 5% deposit – meaning they can purchase their home having saved a smaller amount upfront.

As we build back better from the pandemic, we are determined to do everything we can to support first-time buyers and the housing market.

We are building more homes – in 2019 a pledge to build 300,000 new and attractive homes a year was announced with an investment of over £12bn in affordable housing over the next five years – the largest investment in a decade.

Housing minister Christopher Pincher: “In a year that has tested us like no other, we have never felt more of a connection to the place we call home and the sense of security and comfort that comes with it.”
