WHO WE B - meet more of the team 👋

This week, we're introducing you to Martina, David and Katie.

From how they approach design to the things that matter to them outside of work, here's a little more about the people behind Barefoot.

What our clients think from a deep retrofit and refurbishment project in Bristol?

We very much enjoyed working with Barefoot Architects on our recent extension project.

We initially approached Barefoot in 2023 when we were in the process of buying our house, to check whether a rear kitchen extension was feasible. We were hoping to build an open plan kitchen/dining area, plus separate utility room, and include space for a new seating area and piano.

We worked with Sam, Adam and Martina who developed the project from initial ideas and sketches through to a comprehensive set of designs and specifications which we handed to our main contractor.

Barefoot were lovely to work with throughout, providing a sense of fun and a spark of creativity alongside the expertise needed to provide a design which works brilliantly.

Now that the project is completed, the space works brilliantly, being both light, airy and calming as well as vastly more practical than before.

As part of the project we have also transitioned completely away from fossil fuels, with triple glazing, EWI and a heat pump.

Overall we are delighted with the finished result and would be very happy to recommend Barefoot Architects.

A warmer, more comfortable home this winter? 🏡

Retrofit is a big part of what we do at Barefoot Architects. Our clients transformed this tired semi-detached house in North Bristol into a modern, energy-efficient home that now looks fantastic, too!

The improvements included:
🌿 External wall insulation to the side and back, internal wall insulation using breathable woodfibre insulation and lime plaster to the front.
☀️ Solar panels, batteries and air source heat pump
🌡️ Insulated ground floors with underfloor heating
🪟 New triple-glazed VELFAC windows throughout.

By combining thoughtful design, natural materials and renewable energy, our clients have created a beautiful home that is warmer, more comfortable and more sustainable.

Thinking about retrofitting your own home? We'd love to help!

WHO WE B 👋

We’re proud to be a B Corp, but for us, being a B Corp is ultimately about people.

So, over the next few weeks, we’re introducing you to the people behind Barefoot. The architects, designers and thinkers who make up our team.

We asked everyone a few questions about what matters to them, how they approach their work and what they care about.

This is Who We B.

First up, meet Maria, Jess and Sam 👋

What does a climate-resilient family home look like?

Our latest project in Bristol has been featured in Architects’ Journal, exploring how thoughtful design can create a comfortable, low-energy home that is better prepared for a changing climate.

From natural materials and passive solar design to careful consideration of overheating, energy use and connection to the garden, this home puts climate resilience at the heart of family life.

Community-led housing: the best thing since sliced bread?

What can homemade sourdough teach us about the future of housing?

At this week’s National Community Led Housing Summit, we explored whether community-led housing could become a stronger pillar of UK housing supply - and what needs to change to make that possible.

From access to land and finance, to planning, delivery support and building a stronger evidence base, there’s a lot of work still to do.

But the potential is exciting: homes shaped by the people who live in them, rooted in community and designed with long-term social and environmental value in mind.
